Monteith's Engages Monty The Dog in Employment
Monteith's Signs Up Monty The Dog To Choose Its Hops And Barley
Monteith's is pleased to announce the full time employment of Monty, a fully trained bloodhound, who has an incredible sense of smell. Monty had been influential in selecting the Southern Cross hops and Charmay barley for Monteith's Single Source.
"We first met Monty when we took him to search for Southern Cross hops in the Nelson area," says Monteith's marketing manager, Russell Browne. "It wasn't long before he settled on Ian Thorn's excellent hops. We were so impressed after he also selected Bill Davey's imperious Charmay barley down in Rakaia. The results he delivered for us with Single Source (www.singlesource.co.nz) were amazing. Tony rang me up after and demanded that we sign him up as soon as possible."
Browne had to move quickly though as Monty was fast earning a reputation for selecting the best ingredients for award winning brews.
Dogs have nearly 220 million smell-sensitive cells over an area about the size of a pocket handkerchief (compared to 5 million over an area the size of a postage stamp for humans). An intensive search for a scent, for instance searching a ship for contraband or in this case hops and barley, can actually be very fatiguing for a dog, and it's important to find a dog that is motivated to continue this hard work for a long period of time. Monty loves his work and the Monteith's brewery team always let him have a good rest after hop harvest in his huge basket at the brewery in Greymouth.
"He's a real character down here at the brewery and we're delighted to have retained his services on a full time basis. It was great to see he turned his nose up at the other offers that had come his way," commented Monteith's brewer Tony Mercer.
