Taite Music Prize: This week's featured finalists
Ladi6 - The Liberation Of... (Question Music)
Spending 6 months based in Berlin and performing over 60 shows in Europe and the UK, Ladi6 and Parks were busy wowing audiences with their unique blend of hip hop, soul and funk - and they were busy recording this album. Ladi6 and Parks have supported top artists such as Gil Scott Heron on his European and UK tour, Mos Def, Mayer Hawthorne and German Hip Hop stars Blumentopft as well as festival slots and solo shows. Described by London's Metro Magazine as "One to Watch" they say Ladi6 "knows how to make an impression - including a recent wow-inducing support slot for Gil Scott-Heron at London's Southbank Centre".
The Naked and Famous - Passive Me, Aggressive You
(Somewhat Damaged) Auckland five-piece band, The Naked and
Famous' debut album features smash singles Young Blood and
Punching In A Dream. This full-length debut follows the
release of two EPs in 2008 that punched well above their
weight and kept fans hanging out for more of the band's
unique synth pop-rock. Young Blood won the band the 2010
Silver Scroll award. The vocal duties are shared by Ailsa
Xayalith and Thom Powers, complimenting each other well, one
never overpowering the other whilst adding diversity and
range.

Record Store Day, now an
annual affair, is happening on Saturday April 16th and
stores across the country (and around the world) are
celebrating the fact that you can still buy great music out
in the real world. Record stores have often also provided a
haven from the real world for music lovers, something which
hopefully hasn't changed.
Record stores can't save your life. But they can give you a better one." Nick Hornby

One of New Zealand's best-loved artists, Don McGlashan, is recovering from a nasty cycle accident he had last week: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10716334. We are really sorry to hear this, and we wish him a prompt recovery.
New release fanfare
Alt. country rock n roll band Devils Elbow release their first music video - These Days; the track is taken from their debut album Sand On Chrome which was released August 2010. The video features footage of New Zealand shot on 8mm film by Cyril Parker which dates throughout the 1950s and is mostly of the Hawkes Bay area. Devils Elbow consists of core members Alec Withers on vocals/guitar and Andrew Gladstone (ex-Garageland) on drums/vocals. The band plays live as a duo and in various other formations including bass players, acoustic sets and featuring various "quests". Joining the band more recently and regularly on bass is Dominic Coyle. http://www.myspace.com/devilselbowofficial
David Kilgour has a new album with his combo the Heavy Eights - released on April 25th. Titled Left by Soft, it is David's eighth solo album and his fourth with Arch Hill. Check out MP3: "Diamond Mine" Left by Soft comes on the heels of the Clean's excellent 2009 outing, Mister Pop. You could say it's all part of a late-career renaissance, but that implies there's been some sort of valley in his 30 years of making music. The album is out on Vinyl, CD, MP3 on April 25rd. And the Vinyl features HAND MADE cover artwork by David Kilgour and some special associates. David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights are also heading out on tour around New Zealand - here are the dates and cities. Arch Hill are also releasing the debut EP by Auckland band Ghost Wave out on April 11th. The band have been playing shows around the traps in Auckland, including carpark parties with their buddies Surf City, and Camp Low Hum, plus the Arch Hill vs Muzai BBQ. http://www.archhill.co.nz/
Aotearoa's magnanimous psych-rock-blues quartet, Little Bushman, announce the release of their new album Te Oranga, along with bevy of tour dates. This is their long-anticipated follow up to 2007's Pendulum and is their third studio album, written and recorded over the last 2 years at frontman Warren Maxwell's own recording facilities, Stonefeather studios. http://littlebushman.com/ Formerly of Goldenhorse, writer/singer/guitarist Ben King emerges with his new band Grand Rapids. King is joined by other established players including Gareth Thomas (Goodshirt), Andrew Keoghan, Milan Nobilo and drummer Will Scott. Faintheartedness is the band's debut album, with influences from folk rock through to 80s pop and an emphasis on well crafted songs and quality musicianship. http://musichype.com/grand-rapids/
Renowned composer John Psathas is releasing his latest masterpiece, Helix. Inspired by an eclectic range of musical interests, the album takes the listener on a millennia-leaping journey, from the sounds of the ancient Mediterranean, through the dance music of 18th century Italy, to the latest dubstep and drum'n'bass beats of 21st century South East London. The album features stellar performances by the New Zealand String Quartet, NZTrio and Donald Nicolson. Helix is a truly 21st century album - a must for fans of - and newcomers to - John's extraordinary music. http://www.rattlerecords.net/index.php
On the live front Fabel and the UCSA are rewarding the immense efforts of the Student Volunteer Army in Chrustchurch by putting on the official Student Volunteer Army Thank You Concert on April 16 on the Ilam Fields, featuring a mighty lineup including Kora, Kidz in Space, Sunshine Soundsystem, the Upbeats and more to come. Fat Freddy's Drop have announced shows at The Mercury Theatre, Auckland and The Front Room, Wellington. The band is leading the charge for live music at the oldest surviving theatre in Auckland. Established in 1910, The Mercury Theatre has recently been used as a cinema and a church. Congregating at The Mercury Theatre for two nights on 20th and 21st May and The Front Room on 4th June, Freddys promise a riff of old and new tunes that they'll be taking on the road overseas, including a headline show at the 5000 capacity Brixton Academy in London, followed by shows in Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Norway, Belgium, France, Spain and Brisbane. The band's only local performance since January has been at the Cuba For Christchurch multi-band fundraiser. The focus for Fat Freddy's Drop on their return home from the Northern Hemisphere will be recording a new studio album. Yeah right. http://www.fatfreddysdrop.com/ Around the World Here's something we can all relate to following the devastating impact of the Christchurch earthquake, and Cantabrians in particular - although this is on a really large scale. Over 1000 tours have been canceled in Japan, and with the country still battling an uncertain future in regards to radioactive fallout, of course, entertainment is not a priority. At a time when people of Urayasu are traveling to hotels to pay to have a bath because their water supplies are still out of action, there are reports that there is a nationwide feeling that it is wrong to be spending money on 'frivolous' luxuries at this time. So, Tokyo Disneyland remains closed (it normally attracts 70,000 visitors a day) and rock tours keep getting cancelled.Pollstar reports that most of the tour cancellations that happened immediately following the disaster had to do with concerns over infrastructure but now artists continue to postpone or completely cancel tours citing 'the effects of the disaster' as the reason.
