Billy TK Snr & Doug Jerebine to play intimate Auckland show
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Godfathers of New
Zealand stoner rock Billy TK Snr & Doug Jerebine to play
intimate Auckland show Hot on the heels of their Kyuss
Lives supports – Billy TK Snr and Doug Jerebine will
perform one Auckland show at the Lucha Lounge in Newmarket
after their Kyuss support slot on Saturday 14th May. The
show will see the release of two recordings made last year
by Doug and Billy. An audio document of Doug and Billy’s
first time playing in 41 years captured live in Wellington
at Happy and Frantification recorded at Frisbee studios will
be the debut release of the pair.
The two
local guitar legends will combine forces in a rare intimate
double-header. Doug Jerebine and Billy T.K. Sr. are known as
two of the finest and fieriest guitar players New Zealand
has ever produced.
Billy TK Snr. rose to fame in the late 60s as guitarist with local rock pioneers the Human Instinct, where his fretboard feats earned him the epithet ‘the Maori Hendrix’. The three albums he recorded with the Instinct – Burning Up Years, Stoned Guitar and Pins In It – are considered psych-rock classics and highly collectible. In the 70s he formed Billy T.K. and the Powerhouse, a sprawling fusion outfit in which his playing took on an even more jazzy and experimental edge. The father of well-known local bluesman Billy T.K. Jr. and Electric Wire Hustle’s Mara T.K., Billy T.K. Sr. has continued to perform and develop his unique and incendiary style.
If any local musician deserves the word ‘legend’ it is Doug Jerebine. Acknowledged in the 60s as the country’s most versatile and adventurous guitarist, he played in leading Auckland club band The Embers and seminal psychedelic group The Brew, and as a session musician on countless recordings, before leaving for England in 1968. There he worked with the likes of Jeff Beck and Jr. Walker, and recorded a groundbreaking album of his own songs. Though the album remained unreleased, he taught several of the songs to Billy T.K., which became staples of the Human Instinct’s repertoire. Meanwhile Jerebine headed to India, where he would remain for several decades. Currently based in Britain, Jerebine has paid several recent visits to New Zealand, during which he and Billy T.K. have rekindled their musical camaraderie.
Doug’s 1969 album will be officially released on LP, by US label Drag City later this year.
Joining Doug & Billy will be the rhythm section of Miles Gillete (ex Salad Daze & Fluf) on drums and Chris Orange (ex Terrorways & Features) on bass.
