Who Are Our Facebook Friends?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monday May 2nd 2011

Who Are Our Facebook Friends?

The average New Zealand Facebook user has 124 Facebook friends (mean), according to a new poll by UMR Research. The poll also asked New Zealanders who their Facebook friends were:

- 70% are friends with someone they have not seen since school.

- 35% are friends with someone they have never met in person.

- 29% are friends with someone under the age of 13. This is significant because Facebook’s policy is that users have to be at least 13 years old to set up a profile.

- 26% have a former partner (e.g. an ex-boyfriend) amongst their friends.

- Just 14% are Facebook friends with their current employer.

The data is from UMR Research’s latest online survey of a nationally representative sample of 1,000 New Zealanders aged 18 years and over. These questions were asked of the 687 respondents who were Facebook users [1].
