This show marks the aniversary of my first buddhist birthday. The reason I first began to meditate was in order to take control of my racing thoughts, and to focus my cognition in a more positve direction. Being bi-polar and prone to depression is a challenge to me and to those who tolerate my highs and lows. When I began to chant and became a Nichiren Buddhist, I regained control of my thoughts and my life. This show to me is a victory; a victory over my own negativity. To reprogramme my own cognition in a positve way for myself and everyone around me. A determination to be happy and create happiness for others (the most noble of causes).

ETERNAL CITY: MELISSA MCDOUGALL.
OPENING: 6.30 - 8.00pm Monday 9 May.
Eternal City is a celebration of 20 years of painting the city. These cinematic atmospheric works are indicitive of a life long interest in themes relating to the city and how people inhabit urban spaces. Common themes in my work include nightscapes, shop windows, lights and waifish female figures inhabiting mysterious city streets. I have a particular love of Japanese prints (Kunisada especially), the French Surrealists, Gothic writing, Film Noir, Ferris Wheels, Ludwig Kirchner, and Nick Cave. This show includes approximately 15 new works and 15 retrospective works dating from 1992, which allows the veiewer to see the developement of an entire practice over 20 years.
