APO Peels Musical Onion

APO Peels Musical Onion

The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra invites listeners to peel back the layers of a classical masterpiece in the first of the APO’s Unwrap the Music performances on Thursday 12 May.

Unwrap the Music concerts are specially priced after-work entrées to the world of classical music, and are perfect for the curious newcomer or anyone who just wants to know more about the inner workings of the greatest works in the repertoire.

Following the success of last year’s series, the APO is delighted to announce that Graham Abbott is returning to present three Unwrap concerts, the first of which focuses on Brahms’s passionate fourth symphony.

Graham uncovers the elements that make this Brahms’s best-loved orchestral work, with the APO – conducted by David Kay – providing musical examples.

“It’s a real boon for everyone that Graham Abbott has returned this year,” says APO Chief Executive Barbara Glaser. “There’s 1000 years of classical music history and that can be daunting. Graham has a way of explaining the important things that go on within a piece of music, and doing so in a way that is entertaining; he never leaves people feeling they’ve been lectured to. That’s a real gift.”
