Gridiron Gladi8tors On Maori
Television
A former top New Zealand gridiron player is aiming to increase the profile of American football in New Zealand.
Producer George Taulealeausumai, who has
represented and coached gridiron nationally, says THE
STEELDOME GLAIDI8TORSTHE STEELDOME GLAIDI8TORS, which
starts on Maori Television this Thursday, is the first
televised eight-a-side gridiron competition.
Each
episode of THE STEELDOME GLADI8TORSTHE STEELDOME
GLADI8TORS, features one game from the annual tournament
and is commentated by Maori Television presenter Te Arahi
Maipi with the series starting this Thursday 26 May at
10.30pm.
Taulealeausumai says while gridiron has been
in New Zealand for about 30 years in the traditional
11-a-side format the profile of the sport is relatively low,
but he aims to change this with his faster and simpler
eight-a-side competition.
For this he has utilised
Auckland's eight existing gridiron club’s (AFA) to form
his own eight-a-side league of six teams that compete at an
annual one-day tournament.
