ROTORUA 26.05.11:
Rotorua is the first sell out city on John Rowles’ farewell tour of 11 New Zealand cities.
Local fans have snapped up all available tickets for the 64 year old New Zealand performer’s Now is the Hour – the Final Bow tour.
The 16 July concert at the Civic Theatre will bring down the curtain on a career that has spanned nearly five decades and which has included chart topping hits like If I Only Had Time, Hush Not a Word to Mary, Cheryl Moana Marie and Tania.
At 21 he was top of the charts in USA, UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand and at 22 he was the youngest performer to headline a major Las Vegas showroom, at the Flamingo Hotel. In 1980 he was awarded an OBE for his musical achievements and for promoting New Zealand.
Events & Venues Rotorua general manager Peter McLeod says the quick sell-out of tickets puts paid to some recent suggestions that Rotorua people don’t support live music acts when they are booked for Rotorua. He said the Suzanne Prentice Kids for Kids show at the Civic Theatre next Tuesday (May 31) is also a complete sell-out.
“Clearly Rotorua residents will get right behind a show if it involves a well known and respected artist or band.”
Mr McLeod said the promoter had indicated that a second Rotorua show for John Rowles' was not possible so the concert at the Civic Theatre in July would probably be the last time locals see him perform live.
In announcing his farewell tour Rowles’ said recently that he intends settling down in Australia to spend time with his children and to work on a biography, and possibly a movie, about his life.
