Glen Innes Healthy Kai Awards

Glen Innes Healthy Kai Programme

Media Release Tuesday, 24 May 2011

Town centre retailers achieve success at 2011 Glen Innes Healthy Kai Awards event

The Glen Innes Healthy Kai (GIHK) programme’s 2011 Retailer Awards event was a great success as a number of local food retailers were presented with awards by Mayor Len Brown on Monday, 23 May. Kebab 149 and Long Rainbow achieved a Gold Award; Hong Kong Kitchen, The Great Tong Takeaway, and Charlie K’s all received Silver Awards; and Eastside Bakehouse and My Bakery achieved a Bronze Award. Newcomers to the programme, Turo Turo and Oh Oishi Sushi received participation certificates.

“This is a great outcome. It is wonderful this year to give out two Gold Awards to retailers and to see that the food that is available in GI is improving in both nutrition and food safety quality. This shows us the programme is working well,” says GIHK chair Matt Appleyard.

“The presence of Auckland’s Mayor added a great sense of occasion to this event and showed that the retailers’ efforts are truly acknowledged.”

Auckland District Healthy Board’s Community Liaison Dietitian Chris Cook says the programme’s approach is working as shown by the annual shopper survey’s improved results.

“We could not do this without the support of the retailers. If customers see an award in a GIHK retailer, they can be assured that healthy food choices are available and should look for the small signs near the counter which identify these. It is a two way process, and the retailers also need the customers’ support so that they can keep making and selling the Healthy Kai choices.”

Customers can also ‘Look for the hook’ on the large bright blue GIHK posters that are displayed in each retailer’s shop window to identify the GIHK healthy food choices available.

Glen Innes Business Association’s Manager Gary Holmes is very supportive of the programme as it both supports and recognises local businesses’ achievements.

To join GIHK, retailers must have an A or B Food safety rating and provide at least three food choices which meet the nutrition GIHK criteria (low fat and salt and a vegetable or fruit component).
