spent much of March and April this year fulfilling a
Department of Conservation artist-in-residency in the small
former-mining town of Naseby, in Central Otago. He lived in
the Old Post Office, which was built in 1900 and enormous,
although now largely unused. One News covered the farewell
concert he put on for his Naseby friends. If you'd like to
watch the story, it is Kiwi-born Jackie Bristow has scored another
coup for her sweet melodies in the United States. Already
heralded by US critics as one of New Zealand's most talented
musical exports, she's now had her songs Freedom and Pray
For The Love from her album Freedom added to the Starbucks
playlist in America. This means, as of 28 June, her music
will be heard by the patrons of over 7000 Starbucks stores
throughout the US. What's more, she'll be supporting both
Bettye Lavette and John Oates (of Hall and Oates fame) at
shows in the US this autumn. She will also be performing in
many other Californian opening spots and touring dates
currently being confirmed for August and September. New release
fanfare The Thomas Oliver Band have just released ‘Bad
Talkin' Man’, the new single off their debut album Baby,
I'll Play. The single, mixed by Mu from Fat Freddy's Drop
and mastered in LA by Stephen Marcussen, has long been a
live favourite. "Bad Talkin' Man always seems to find its
way to people's hips" says frontman Thomas Oliver. A video
directed by Hayley Gray (Weta Workshop) and made with help
from NZ on Air will accompany the single in the following
weeks. Gray was behind the story concept of the band's
multi-award winning video, ‘Goin' Home’. The band are
set to embark on the 'Bad Talkin' Man Tour' to celebrate the
release of the single. Tickets available from Fresh from a
crushing performance supporting Los Angeles seminal hard
rock band Helmet, Cobra Khan unleash their brand new single
Strider. Since 2008’s acclaimed debut Helgorithms, Strider
is the first offering from the upcoming sophomore album
Adversities. Strider Is streaming now at Wellington folk duo Rosy Tin Teacaddy wrote and recorded
their 3rd album whilst on a writing residency at Lake
Tarawera in 2010, through the Dept of Conservation's 'Wild
Creations' Artist In Residence Program and Creative NZ. By
forging new interpretations of existing myths, the duo
carved their own into All Mountains Are Men under the shadow
of Tarawera.Written and recorded entirely in isolation at a
cottage by the lake, this new collection of songs extends
Rosy Tin Teacaddy's sonic palette by layering
field-recordings, omnichord and cello on a bed of
interlacing vocal harmonies and acoustic guitars, resulting
in contemporary musical story-telling that is both cinematic
and intimate. They are currently on tour; check this site

The music from the “grandfather of New Zealand music”
Douglas Lilburn - with its clear connection to both his
teacher, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and to the landscape of his
beloved New Zealand - is a delight and an inspiration.
Violin And Piano Works is performed by Elizabeth Holowell
and Dean Sky-Lucas, who present works for violin and piano,
and Cameron Rhodes who reads Salutes To Seven Poets. March 2010 saw the official opening of
the Auckland Town Hall's newly rebuilt Klais organ, and you
can hear its first solo recording performed by organist John
Wells on the album 'Auckland Town Hall Organ'.This CD gives
a taste of just a few of the styles and effects that this
marvelous organ can support with its enormous dynamic and
timbral range. Avant garde works will tickle your ears,
rousing marches from the heyday of the Empire will get your
toes tapping; subtle French nuances will delight you and a
good helping of traditional organ repertory will satisfy the
connoisseur. This recording also celebrates the 100th
anniversary of the building of The Auckland Town Hall and
also the 200th anniversary of Franz Liszt - with the
inclusion of one of his most passionate organ works. It is
also released in memory of the 3 people who lost their lives
in the 22nd Feb Christchurch Earthquake when removing a
church organ that had been damaged in the earlier shake. You
can also catch him performing before the Auckland
Philharmonia on July 14. On the live front 11 years after the
carnage of a messy rock n roll cliché-filled break-up, the
cleared grudges are now forgotten or forgiven and Head Like
A Hole have emerged again; older and more hirsute but still
able to rock. Booga Beazley, Nigel Regan, Andrew Durno, Mike
Franklin-Browne and the addition of Andrew Ashton on guitar,
have proved they are back with a vengeance. Their new album
Blood Will Out is due July 4, and features 11 tracks of
classic stonking rock ‘n’ roll. And on the back of this
album release, Head Like A Hole are pleased to announce
their Blood Will Out national tour this August, where lucky
fans will get to hear all the new songs plus some hanging
from the rafters favourites. They'll be joined on the
bloody road by Cairo Knife Fight, who have just completed
their new EP Cairo Knife Fight II, due for release Monday
8th August. The slightly unhinged duo of Nick Gaffaney and
Aaron Tokona are now looking forward to getting out on the
road and pummelling the crowds with their new songs –
definitely not for the faint hearted. Tickets will be
available from The La De Da Festival
returns this New Year’s Eve, bringing together some fine
New Zealand acts as well as the introduction of
international acts. Party-goers will once again make the
pilgrimage to the beautiful vineyard surroundings of
Martinborough, just one hour’s drive from Wellington. Here
si the lineup: Six60 (NZ), Fat Freddy’s Drop (NZ), Donovan
Frankenreiter (US), Kora (NZ), State of Mind Live (NZ),
SKisM (UK), Blue King Brown (Aus), Sola Rosa (NZ),
Katchafire (NZ), The Upbeats w/ MC Lowqui, Dodge & Fuski
(UK), Iva Lamkum (NZ), Concord Dawn (NZ), Eddie K (UK).
Tickets are available from 9AM Wednesday 29 June online from
Fresh from
being awarded an APRA Professional Development Award,
songstress Miriam Clancy is taking her songs, guitar and a
retro sequencer on tour throughout the North Island from
July 7. These shows will see Miriam road-testing new songs
and playing material from her critically acclaimed 2009
album Magnetic. This will be your last chance to see her on
home-turf for some time as she departs for New York, America
to being recording a brand new album with one of the
producer/engineer Chris Coady. Having worked with top bands
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio, Grizzly Bear and
Santigold, Chris Coady is name-dropped as one of the top
“next generation producers” by avid music watchers, Around the
World Chicago based indie label Numero has opted out of
Apple's iTunes In The Cloud and in particular iTunes Music
Match. "We feel that a great risk is being taken by Apple
and the major labels that have accepted the terms of this
new product wholesale with not a thought beyond the 150M
those so-called “big four” will probably divide and pay
to their top executives. By that, we mean that laws that
protect compositions and copyrights for songs are, more or
less, being trampled under these agreements," according to
label head Rob Sevier. He continued: "...Apple and their
major label “partners” have created a reward system that
is both incomprehensible in scope and totally out of sync
with iCloud’s streaming peers’ (Rdio, Spotify, et al)
financial mechanics...we feel that Apple’s pittance is an
insult not only to them, but every other musician, living or
dead...". http://www.management-ware.com/MWSMassMailingNewsResources/images/spacer.gif
