Kumeu district will be celebrating National Poetry Day for the first time - of many.
In what will become an annual event, poetry will be exhibited in the Kumeu Arts Centre, but also on street corners, in shop windows and on community notice-boards.
Poetry will reflect Kumeu's heart. It will be accessible, surprising, inspiring, enlightening. We bring poetry to the people, with snippets and verses in all our local towns.

Poetry Phone lets you dial-a-poem, from 9am - 9pm, on Friday the 22nd of July. Poetry is read live when you call, or txt’d. There are four different numbers to call, and two to txt, each with a different genre of poem. Some well-known favourites will be recited, but the focus is on emerging local poets reading their own work, including poems written especially for the day. This will be an (09)-based event, but anyone can call, or txt the (021) numbers.

Hands on Poetry is centred around poetry ‘zines and self-publishing. The event celebrates the launch of Hands Like Mirrors, a self-published print anthology featuring poetry and short fiction from young NZ and Australian poets. Contributors will read their work from the anthology, and copies will be available for sale.

Visitors are also encouraged to take part in the creation of a collaborative poetry ‘zine. Bring a poem of your own (or write one on the spot) and use Alphabet City's typewriters and tools to design a page of the ‘zine. Alphabet City will compile, photocopy and bind the ‘zine, then post copies to participants as well as ‘zine libraries in New Zealand and around the world.

This year’s National Poetry Day is especially vital for re-establishing literature as a means of communication and celebration here in our shaken city. We will precede the event with our usual Poetry Wall, where we encourage all to come and add a poem of their own or one they love to a dedicated wall within the shop.

Poets contributing to the event this year include new writers from the School for Young Writers and Hagley Writers’ Institute, and established poets James Norcliffe and Tusiata Avia. Morrin Rout will chair the session and it will culminate with a performance by Eastern’s lead singer/songwriter Adam McGrath.

Tea and coffee provided. No fee. Bring your lunch and join in the celebration of the word.
