Monteith's Recipe Winner Tries Hand Again In Cooking Competition

Linda Hammond of Bulls has been busy in the kitchen re-testing her cookery skills, a year after winning the 2010 inaugural Monteith's Wild Food Recipe Competition. Linda has re-entered the competition which is currently underway online at monteiths.co.nz

Last year she beat nearly 100 other nationwide competitors and took out the top prize with her Smoky Eel Mussel and Gurnard Risotto matched by Monteith's Golden Lager.

This year's competition is again calling for members of the public to show their innovative and creative streak using 'wild' ingredients matched with a Monteith's beer. Prospective entrants have until 11th July to enter online. The winner stands to win over $1000 worth of Le Creuset cookware, a trip for two to Auckland for the 2011 Monteith's Beer & Wild Food Challenge Cook Off at The Foodstore on 8th August and dinner at five-star restaurant, Vinnies.

Linda's 2011 entry is aptly called 'Rabbit goes Asia'.

"My husband and son often shoot rabbits," she explains. "I choose a young rabbit to make this dish with. We have watercress we collect from fresh streams. I used small wild field mushrooms that came up in the farm paddocks at my son's home not too far away. With the cooler weather I wanted to make something warm and filling that used the ingredients available to me. The dish is warm and satisfying and no one would guess it's rabbit you're enjoying."

Linda opted to match her dish with Monteith's Pilsner Beer. "My dish has spices and herbs used in it which I feel the Monteith's Pilsner complements well as it cleanses the pallet yet lets those ingredients come through."

Linda says she's excited about being involved in the competition for a second year running and hopes her success inspires other locals to enter.

"It's a fantastic event and I had a huge amount of fun last year, especially when I won. It would be nice to win again this year but either way it's just nice to create something different and test different flavours with Monteith's beer."
