Juniors gear up for first competition of the season at Cardrona

It’s time for the juniors to dust off the skis and snowboards and launch straight into some friendly competition at Cardrona Alpine Resort.

The Calci Yum Kids Cup returns for its third year on Wednesday July 20 and promises to be a fantastic boredom-buster these school holidays.

Cardrona Sales and Marketing Manager Nadia Ellis says this mini slopestyle event, geared at five-to-12-year olds, is a great way to kick off the 2011 junior events.

“The snow has come just in time for the New Zealand school holiday and mother nature seems to be making up for lost time – we had 15cms fall last night (Saturday) and it’s still snowing this morning (Sunday),” she says.

“Cardrona prides itself on being the country’s favourite family mountain and we want to support that even further by offering fun events to help develop the young ones skills and confidence.

“The Calci Yum Kids Cup is open to children of all abilities with a focus on fun and participation. It’s a great opportunity for them to have a go at a freestyle competition with a relaxed atmosphere.”

The Kids Cup will take place in a Mini X Games style arena in the Weston’s Gap terrain park off the McDougall’s trail.

“Our Park Crew has made the course look like the real deal with terracing and fun features,” Ms Ellis says.

“We’ll also have the ‘Merry Poacher’ back showing off his moves on the slopes to keep the specatators and participants entertained and an MC will be calling tricks. It going to be a great day, wrapped up with a medal ceremony in the courtyard with prizes from Dragon, Rossignol and Lonestar Wanaka.”
