Poetry comes to Auckland

AUCKLAND LIBRARIES POETRY WRITING COMPETITION
This competition is for original work written by any member of Auckland Libraries. There are three age categories: 12 and under, 13-18, over 18. Entries close on 13th July. Entries online via the Library website www.aucklandlibraries.govtnz
Prize winners will be announced at a ceremony at Mt Albert Community Library
84 St Lukes Road, Sandringham, Auckland on Friday 22 July 2011, at 5.30 pm.

POETRY LIVE RESURRECTION NIGHT
7 p.m. – 10.30 p.m., Tuesday 19th July 2011
The Thirsty Dog Tavern, 469 Karangehape Road, Auckland.
Come dressed as or in the persona of your favourite deceased poet and read a poem by that poet. Musician and guest poet to be advised. To enter just sign up for Open Mic on the night or register your interest at one of the earlier Tuesday nights. Prizes for best performance of a dead poet’s poem, best original work and spot/quiz prizes.
MC Penny, aided by Rachael, Kiri, Jeremy, Christian and Miriam - all of whom will be dressed to kill.


UTTER BRILLIANCE
7 p.m. – 10.30 p.m., Thursday 21st July 2011
The Thirsty Dog Tavern, 469 Karangehape Road, Auckland.
An open slam event with readings of 90 seconds or less, with a first prize of $250, and other prizes and encouragements. The Poetry Slam will open to enter on the night with registrations from 7 p.m. Slam MC and host is Michael Rudd. All entrants should be prepared to read/perform up to three poems. Also we’ll have our regular Pub Poetry Quiz open to all, again with prizes. On the night, there’ll be poetry performances from established Poets

POETRY TRAIL

POETRY PHONE
9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Friday 22nd July 2011
Poetry Phone lets you dial-a-poem, from 9am - 9pm, on Friday the 22nd of July. Poetry is read live when you call, or txt’d. There are four different numbers to call, and two to txt, each with a different genre of poem. Some well-known favourites will be recited, but the focus is on emerging local poets reading their own work, including poems written especially for the day. This will be an (09)-based event, but anyone can call, or txt the (021) numbers.


PARNELL CHILDREN’S POETRY FEST

Jubilee Hall, Jubilee Building, Parnell Library, 545 Parnell Road, Auckland 1052.
The Parnell Library invites 5-12 year-olds to participate in a celebration of children's poetry. Meet and hear published New Zealand Poets perform their own work and share the poems that inspired them as children. Poets performing include Simone Kaho, Rosetta Allan and Jai Macdonald. All children who attend will go in the draw for poetry prizes.


CHALKING NEWMARKET

Station Square, Newmarket.
An opportunity for poets, known and unknown to write their poetry on the paving of the square. Informal readings may happen. Well-known poet, Siobhan Harvey will be our muse. Chinese poets especially welcome. Free chalk provided. Supported by Dymocks Bookshop, Newmarket.


IN VOICE AND MUSIC – BRAVE NEW WORLD

MELODY STRANGE AND MICHAEL LIPMOUTH: POETRY NIGHT

Melody strange, Michael Lipschutz and Peter Sielding will be performing a short concert for National Poetry Day. The performance has a jazz theme and consists of Melody singing a jazz standard and reciting several poems. Michael will be scatting his poems to the sounds of a jazz saxophonist very much in the style of Tom Waits.

HANDS ON POETRY

Alphabet City, 71 Mt Eden Road, Eden Terrace
Hands on Poetry is centred around poetry ‘zines and self-publishing. The event celebrates the launch of Hands Like Mirrors, a self-published print anthology featuring poetry and short fiction from young NZ and Australian poets. Contributors will read their work from the anthology, and copies will be available for sale.
Visitors are also encouraged to take part in the creation of a collaborative poetry ‘zine. Bring a poem of your own (or write one on the spot) and use Alphabet City's typewriters and tools to design a page of the ‘zine. Alphabet City will compile, photocopy and bind the ‘zine, then post copies to participants as well as ‘zine libraries in New Zealand and around the world.

THE DIVINE MUSES VIII POETRY READING
