SUBWAY® Pro Cycling’s Matt Gorter had a podium finish in the 100 kilometre South Shore Classic in Wisconsin in the United States on Friday.

The pro race was the ninth event in the 43rd annual International Cycling Classic Superweek Pro Tour, a 17 day series of international races in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

Gorter, from Hamilton, was second with an average speed of 46 kilometres per hour in the fast paced race where he was well supported by his SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team mate Nick Lovegrove from Auckland.

“It was really fast with lots of attacks,” Gorter said. “I got in a good move with about 10 laps to go and we worked hard to hold off the field and I nearly got the top step – it was a great result and Nick was good support."

Gorter and Lovegrove were both active throughout the race with Gorter making the decisive eight man break with 10 laps of the 61 lap race to go.

Gorter’s second place came after his fifth place finish the previous day and shows encouraging signs of improvement as New Zealand time trial champion and Olympic medallist Westley Gough joins the team next week for the last five races of the series.

The SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team kicked off its North American campaign last month with the Tour of America's Dairyland and the team’s final hit out will be The Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove in the greater Chicago area before returning to New Zealand in August in time for the first race of the Benchmark elite racing series in Nelson on 16 August.
