Choirs appoints new chair

The Choirs Aotearoa New Zealand Trust, which manages the New Zealand Youth Choir and Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir, has appointed Trevor Kempton as its new Chair.

Voices New Zealand and the Youth Choir have built a worldwide reputation for excellence, Mr Kempton says.

“An important component in maintaining this reputation is the backing of a first-rate executive staff and Board of Trustees,” he says. “I am very proud of what we have achieved and am delighted to be appointed as Chair.”

Mr Kempton recently retired as Managing Director of Naylor Love Ltd, a major national construction company. He is currently an Otago regional councillor and a construction industry consultant. He joined the Choirs Board in 2004 and became Vice-Chairman in 2008. Mr Kempton is also a member of the St Kilda Brass Band and a trustee of the Otago Festival for the Arts.

Fellow Trustee, David Caygill, former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament, is stepping into the Vice-Chairman’s role.

Chief Executive, Roger Lloyd conveyed the Trust’s sincere thanks to retiring Chair, Dr Alan Walmsley, for his dedicated contribution to Choirs over the last nine years.

“The wealth of experience that our new Chair and Vice-Chair bring will be a great benefit to the management of New Zealand’s two national choirs,” Lloyd says.

Recently the 44 members of the NZ Youth Choir came together for the first week-long course in 2011 which concluded with a concert in the New Plymouth Theatre Royal on Saturday, 9 July. In August, Voices NZ Chamber Choir travels to Argentina to take part in the 9th World Symposium on Choral Music in Patagonia and will also give two concerts in Buenos Aires.
