Students Set To Slice And Dice Their Way To Victory Today

Students Set To Slice And Dice Their Way To Victory Today

New Zealand’s top culinary students are set to cook up a storm in a bid to take out the prestigious top spot at the annual Nestlé Toque d’Or event. And, for the first time ever in the history of the New Zealand Nestlé Toque d’Or, an offshore team has confirmed its involvement in the annual student culinary event.

The Hospitality, Tourism, Training Centre (HTTC) in Rarotonga will send a team to compete at this year’s event. Having a completely new team from overseas included in the mix will add a new level of excitement to the competition.

With 17 of the country’s finest culinary professionals on the judging panel scrutinising competitors’ every move, there will be no room for error.

Here are the details:

* Nestlé Toque d’Or takes place from on Monday 18 July 2011 from midday onwards at the ASB Auckland Showgrounds in Greenlane in Auckland.

* The 12 student teams each comprise three students – two culinary and one restaurant service student. They will go head-to-head in a live kitchen cook off in front of a panel of top industry judges.

* Each team is required to prepare and serve six covers of a three course meal in a strict time frame of two-and-a-half hours, all whilst under the watchful gaze of a top local and international judging panel.

* The competition is tough as students must also develop their own unique menus using predetermined ingredients. They are marked by the judges against a predetermined set of criteria including: preparation skills, hygiene, presentation, taste, service of each course, use of correct terminology and sponsors’ products.

* Seventeen of the country’s finest chefs including SKYCITY Auckland Director of Kitchens Mark Wylie and Molten Owner and Chef Michael Van de Elzen make up the experienced judging panel.

There will be some great visuals of competitors in actions, judges scrutinising students, colourful dishes plus interview opportunities.
