Anti-Fur Fashion Advocate Gets Ready, Set, Bake For The SPCA

Cambridge based fashion designer, Robyn Brooks of Ooby Ryn is getting her cupcakes out for cash next month in which she will be taking to the streets in support of the SPCA annual cupcake day scheduled to take place August 29th 2011.

Brooks, who gained recognition after showing at Air New Zealand Fashion Week in 2006 as part of the Verge Breakthrough Designers was raised on a 1000 acre farm in Onewhero where she began riding horses from the age of two. Her passion for animals today still remains a strong influence, proudly being an advocate against using fur for fashion.

This year for the SPCA Cupcake day, Brooks will not only be taking to the kitchen to bake her favourite cupcake recipe but is also donating a prize from her fashion label, Ooby Ryn. The person that raises the most money on Cupcake Day will be the lucky recipient of a garment of their choice from Ooby Ryn’s summer 2011 collection, “Harlequin”.

National Fundraising & Sponsorship Manager Cressida Evans says “Cupcake Day for the SPCA is one of the most important fundraising events on the national calendar for SPCA centres all over New Zealand. The Royal New Zealand SPCA is thrilled to announce that fashion label Ooby Ryn is supporting the event this year” she says.

Brooks was approached by the SPCA after they learnt of her anti-fur ethics and her everyday involvement with animals. “I’m extremely excited to have been given this opportunity to connect with a cause I am truly passionate about whilst been able to showcase my designs to an audience with similar values” says Brooks.

Ooby Ryn’s number one shop assistant is in fact her beloved Maltese/ Chihuahua pooch, Wilson. Since stumbling upon this white ball of fluff two years ago, Wilson and Brooks have become inseparable, “he really is my best friend and has now become a bit of a celebrity in the Cambridge fashion scene, which I am hoping will help with my cupcake sales” she laughs.

The event relies on the support of the public and corporate businesses to raise money for the 48 SPCA centres throughout New Zealand to continue their important animal welfare work in their communities.
