South Island campuses in winning mode at Uni Snow Games
Monday, August 29:
South Island athletes have dominated the placings
on day two of the Uni Snow Games in Wanaka, winning all of
the titles on offer today. (Monday August 29)
With two events on at Cardrona – the Base-sponsored half pipe and the Gravity X – it was an action-packed day, and it was one which the South Island campuses enjoyed with some impressive results.
Titles went the way of Otago University, Queenstown Resort College and Canterbury University and organisers are expecting the competition to heat up, with four more events scheduled for the Games this week.
Uni Snow Games snow manager Blair Smith said there had been great feedback from the competitors on both the Gravity X course and the half pipe.
“It was a great second day of the Uni Snow Games, with two events on,” he said.
“The half pipe jam session was great – Jossi Wells was in training, giving the competitors a bit of inspiration and showing them how it’s done.”
“And the Gravity X course was also really good. Most of the competitors made it down without too many worries, there were some good speeds there.”
University Sport New Zealand National Events Manager Peter McDonald was impressed with today’s competition.
“It was a wicked day at Cardrona. The combination of the two events – the Base-sponsored half pipe and the Gravity Cross – made for an exciting atmosphere and the use of the full Olympic half pipe was a really good experience for the competitors,” he said.
“While the South Island campuses are doing well, the high participation numbers from Auckland University and that there are still four events to come, means there’s plenty of opportunities for them to catch up.”
Queenstown Resort College’s Cameron Day, fresh from competing in the 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games, put his international experience to good use to take out the skier cross title, with Auckland University’s Stefan Calder in second and Lincoln University’s Tim Harker third.
For the females, it was another clean sweep for Otago University, with Charlotte Newbold, Courtney Tate and Frances Newbold taking race honours.
In the boarder cross Otago University’s Sam Burton had the fastest run, taking the gold in the male category, and it was Hannah Orchard representing the University of Canterbury who was the fastest of the females, winning two events today. (Monday, August 29)
The Base-sponsored half pipe snowboard category was won by Otago University’s Marc Andri Riedi, while Orchard picked up her second gold of the day in the female category.
On skis in the half pipe, Dominic Campbell representing the University of Canterbury, got the best mark from the judges, and Hannah James of Otago University was the best of the female skiers in the pipe.
The Uni Snow Games return to Treble Cone on Wednesday (August 31) for the parallel slalom.
