Raglan Film Festival 2011 programme outstanding

A programme of world class movies, with the added attraction of a range of NZ short films, makes this year’s Raglan Film Festival a real treat for film buffs. And there’s more, much more, with an afternoon of Margaret Mahy films for the children, an evening of great surf movies, an evening of films for fans of Cornerstone Roots and Trinity Roots and of course the big red carpet event – the RAFFA awards ceremony honouring our own local film makers. And its all happening this month at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre in Stewart Street, so you really need to lay your hands on a brochure now, or get on the internet to sort out your diary so you don’t miss movies you really want to see. The Festival runs from 16-25 September.

The annual Film Festival has become a highlight of the Arts Centre calendar, and great credit must go to Aaron Mooar, Micah Puklowski, Jacqueline Anderson and Rodger Gallagher who select and source the films, then design a programme that offers the best possible viewing options to all.

Some highlights: ‘Incendies’, described as one of the great cinematic experiences of the year (NZ Listener); Mrs Carey’s Concert, rated five star by the Dominion Post, described as “wonderful” by the Herald on Sunday, and “sublime” by the Sunday Star Times; ‘Cool Summer Tour’ with Cornerstone Roots followed by ‘Trinity Roots – Music is Choice’ make for a great opening night on Friday 16th. ‘Hook Line & Sinker’, ‘Sam Hunt – Purple Balloon and Other Stories’ and ‘Operation 8: Deep in the Forest’ offer widely different examples of New Zealand Film making, as do the myriad of short films, some shown as an entrée to the main feature, others grouped together. ‘Hook Line & Sinker’, ‘Sam Hunt – Purple Balloon and Other Stories’ films have had very limited screening in the Waikato and ‘Operation 8: Deep in the Forest’ has not been screened in the Waikato.

Meanwhile you are invited to meet Whaingaroa’s own film makers and stars on the evening of Saturday 24 September for the Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards – limited tickets are available from the Old School for this glamour event which includes the Award ceremony and dinner. This year there are ten RAFFA nominees including both shorts and feature films. RAFFA award winners will screen on Sunday 25th September at 1.30pm and 3.00pm.
