Age Concern Awareness Week starts tomorrow

Age Concern Awareness Week starts tomorrow

Do you know who we are and how we can help you?

If not, then keep reading! Age Concern is the first port of call for people wanting information on elder abuse and neglect prevention, alleviating loneliness, community connection, and health promotion.

Age Concern National President Liz Baxendine champions the awareness week, which kicks off tomorrow and runs until 2 October 2011, describing it as a chance to showcase the important work Age Concerns do around the country.

“We want to alert seniors, their friends, family and caregivers to the wide range of our services. It’s also an opportunity for volunteers who want to make a difference to join their local Age Concern.”

There are 33 Age Concerns in New Zealand and each is a not-for-profit registered charity.

A highlight of the week will be September 30, when Age Concern New Zealand celebrates the International Day of Older Persons with the announcement of its annual Patron’s Award. This year this takes the form of a photography competition on Facebook. The award is given to encourage positive depictions of older people and ageing.

Special events will continue throughout October at local Age Concerns.

Age Concern does important work ‘serving the needs of older people’ with the support and involvement of local communities around the country.

“This means donations, legacies and the support of community trusts are vital to us,” Mrs Baxendine says.
