Final Call For Entries In 2011 Asics Kids Sports Awards

Final Call For Entries In 2011 Asics Kids Sports Awards

With less than two weeks until term three entries close for the ASICS Sports Awards, organisers have issued a last call for nominations of year 7 and 8 students who have excelled in the sporting arena.

This is the last opportunity to enter the awards for 2011, with the term three winners being named early in term four, along with the 2011 Supreme Award Winner.

Five of the country’s best intermediate aged students were recently named as winners of the term two awards: Zac Brocklehurst (Auckland Normal Intermediate), Christopher Goodwin (St Josephs Catholic School, Hamilton), Ashleigh Bennett (Hawera Intermediate), Ella Harris (Cashmere Primary School, Christchurch) and Emma Hopcroft (Riversdale School, Southland).

These young athletes join the winners of term one and the soon to be judged term three winners, in the running for the Supreme 2011 ASICS Sports Award which will be announced in term four. The overall winner will receive an elite sponsorship package with ASICS, following in the footsteps of ASICS-sponsored athletes like Ross Taylor, Casey Williams and Isaia Toeava.

Open to intermediate aged students, the ASICS Sports Awards recognise students who have achieved outstanding results or who have defied the odds to achieve sporting success in any field.

The term three awards will be judged at the end of the school term across five regions – Auckland North, Auckland South, Central, Canterbury and Southland. All regional winners receive ASICS gear both for themselves and their schools, as well as the opportunity to compete for the end of year supreme award.

Now in their second year, the awards were started by ASICS to encourage young New Zealanders to get active and strive to achieve their sporting goals says ASICS’ Jenny Holdaway.

“We have chosen to focus on intermediate level as we acknowledge that there are numerous sporting awards out there for secondary school students, but very few for intermediate age students who are at a crucial stage in terms of setting foundations for their sporting future,” says Jenny.

“The term two awards delivered an extremely high calibre of sporting success at this age level and is an excellent example of the emerging talent across diverse sports within this age group. We look forward to seeing more high level achievers during the upcoming term three judging. These youngsters are the future of New Zealand sport and we want to reward their dedication at such a young age.”

Students can be nominated by their teachers, coaches, parents, peers or local sporting coordinator or club. Nominations can be made online at www.asicssportsaward.co.nz
