Chalkydigits’ Heart Beats For NZ’s Endangered Kokako
Chalkydigits creative clothing ranges are
continuously inspired by NZ’s bounty of native birds so
naturally they wanted to give them something back. They’ve
come up with a quirky idea to help one unique species have a
good crack at survival - and the best bit is that you can
get in on the act too! Chalkydigits have designed a crafty
kokako badge from which all proceeds will go to the Kaharoa
Kokako Nest Egg fund and ensure the ongoing protection of
these rare birds. All you need to do is part with twenty
bucks and you’ll score an original NZ made chalkydigits
badge AND help these beauties survive. How cool is
that?
Kokako are a stunning gem in our wildlife treasure chest with their distinctive silver colouring, bright blue wattle and their haunting melodic song. These unique birds were once abundant in NZ but now live in only a few pockets of forest in the North Island (and some off-shore islands). For now, the only place most New Zealander’s are likely to see our endangered kokako is on the back of our $50 note. These colourful characters would not still be around at all if it wasn’t for the dedicated work of caring groups like the Kaharoa Kokako Trust in the Bay of Plenty. These volunteers have done such a great job of protecting their resident flock that it’s now an important source for establishing kokako populations in other parts of the country BUT the birdies are not out of the proverbial woods yet!
Keeping their habitat free
of predators requires constant and costly vigilance...this
is where you can help! After the roaring success of their
2009 South Island Robin transfer to Chalky Island,
Chalkydigits really feel like they have surrounded
themselves with an incredibly dedicated crew of like-minded
individuals and they can’t wait to work with you on this
special project - remember, birds of a feather flock
together!
By wearing your chalkydigits kokako badge
everyone will be able to see that your heart beats for
kokako too! Just like the true-blue kokako, though, these
badges are strictly limited edition, so get in quick! Head
to their website to get your badge or find your closest
chalkydigits stockist. If you sign up for their newsletter
while there, you also go into the draw to win a trip to
Kaharoa Conservation Estate to see the kokako in the wild
and ride one of the best mountain bike trails in
NZ.
