Portable, architectural “boxes” create home for ChCh artists

Portable, architectural “boxes” to create home for Christchurch artists

18 modules all locally designed, locally manufactured, flexible and mobile, aim to create a home for local Christchurch artists displaced after the closure of the CBD and High Street precincts in February. ArtBox is a unique project dedicated to meeting an immediate need to provide exhibition and retail space for approximately 100 Christchurch artists, craft practitioners and design retailers who have lost workspace and outlets.

The project, instigated by CPIT, will begin with 18 modules being placed in and around the CPIT campus, with the hope that with the community’s support it can branch out to support a River of Arts throughout the city.

But these units come with an even bigger story.

The ArtBox modules, designed with architectural quality and appeal are essentially a 2.9m cube that allow for the creation of comfortable and highly adaptable spaces. The flexible and adaptable nature of their design, by Christchurch firm F3 is a key driver in the ongoing viability and sustainability of this project.

They can be stacked, oriented and arranged in various practical configurations, are strong, well insulated and weather-tight. Their unique design allows for multi-functional and multi-purpose use across a number of industries from artists, jewellers and craftspeople to school/education institutions as well as festivals and events, meaning their longevity is guaranteed.

Part of the beauty of this project, is its local commitment, so a decision was made early on to use only New Zealand made or manufactured products. This support of the local community, economy and employment is further reinforced with the structural module, cladding, floor, roof panels and even foundation all being built at local manufacturing facilities.

October 27 (7.00pm) will see a significant Art Auction take place at Webb’s Auction House in Auckland, showcasing pieces from 60 of New Zealand’s top artists. The aim is to raise $100,000 to get the first modules built. Phone bidding is welcome.

ArtBox is backed and supported by CPIT Faculty of Creative Industries, Creative NZ, Art Voice Christchurch, Chambers @ 241 and Webb’s Auction House.
