Lincoln University’s 2011 Sports Person of the Year

Current All Black named Lincoln University’s 2011 Sports Person of the Year

Sporting achievements, outstanding contributions to the cultural life of the University and teaching and support excellence have been acknowledged at the annual presentation of Lincoln University and the Lincoln University Students’ Association Blue, Gold and Green Awards.

World Rugby Cup All Black lock Sam Whitelock, a Bachelor of Science student, was named Lincoln University’s Sports Person of the Year for 2011.

Winning this award, Sam follows in the sprig marks of older brother George Whitelock, a 2009 All Black, captain of Canterbury’s provincial rugby team and member of the Crusaders, who was Lincoln University’s Sports Person of the Year in 2009 when a Diploma of Agriculture student.

Lincoln University’s Sports Team of the Year was the Netball A team, winners of the Christchurch Netball Centre’s Premier Championship title for 2011. The netball team had a commendable achievement in winning all 16 games this season. Congratulations to the players:

Lincoln University offers scholarships in seven sports and every year makes an award to the top sports scholar in each category. This year’s winners were:

(Bouldering and weightlifting were two new categories this year for the award of Blues. Bouldering is a style of rock climbing without ropes.)

Also celebrated during the event were the Gold awards. These are given to students who have contributed to the cultural life at Lincoln University through clubs and organisations. The winners were:

• Hamish Beaven, for Lincoln Snow Department
• Holly Gardiner, for Lincoln University Planning Association
• Julia Harrington, for Campus Greens
• Hong Ling, for Lincoln University Chinese Association
• Hadzel Richard, for International Christian Fellowship and Badminton.

The Green awards acknowledge teaching and support excellence at Lincoln University. This year’s winners were:

• Sharon Forbes, Lecturer, Department of Business Management, Law and Marketing, Faculty of Commerce
• Chris Hutchinson, Lecturer, Department of Social Science, Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Sport, Faculty of Environment, Society and Design
• Roger McLenaghen, Senior Tutor, Department of Soil and Physical Science, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences
• Lana Williams, Undergraduate Administrator (Domestic), Student Administration.
