WORLD PREMIERE
“It is always a pleasure to relax and enjoy the sheer musicianship of this group.’’
The New Zealand Herald
New Zealand’s leading piano trio joins forces with outstanding local percussionists Lenny Sakofsky (principal, NZSO) and Jeremy Fitzsimons (principal, Vector Wellington Orchestra) for the dynamic and exotic Dreamscapes.
The NZTrio’s programme of New Zealand and US compositions will begin and end with the funky, toe-tapping music of young American composer Kenji Bunch. The programme features a new work and world premiere from Jack Body, who has developed an earlier one-movement NZTrio commission, Fire in the Belly (2007), into a substantial, three-movement work.
Four meditative works will follow: Morton Feldman’s suspended and delicate Durations 4 is complemented by John Psathas’ gentle Fragment; a rare performance of George Crumb’s mysterious and mesmerising Dream Sequence (Images II) leads to Victoria Kelly’s Sono, which captures the attempt to return to an interrupted dream.
Crumb’s mesmerising Dream Sequence (Images II) is perhaps the most adventurous of the composer’s explorations into the realm of sound events. The percussion is typically exotic, with the pianist playing three water-tuned crystal goblets and a Thai wooden buffalo bell. The percussionist uses Japanese temple bells, crotales (finger cymbals), sleigh bells, maraca, and suspended cymbals. A programme that is both lively and ethereal, Dreamscapes promises to showcase the scope and visual energy of five outstanding performers.
