APO Farewells Town Hall in Grand Finale
APO Farewells Town Hall in Grand Finale
Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra brings its 2011 main-concert season to a triumphant close on Thursday, with the last of this year’s APN News & Media Premier Series performances.
For the season finale, Brahms’s much-loved Piano Concerto No.2 is played by French pianist Cédric Tiberghien.
Tiberghien’s star has continued to rise since he performed with the APO in 2009. In the last two years he has played with many of the world’s leading orchestras in the most prestigious venues, including acclaimed concerts at London’s Wigmore Hall with musical partner and recent APO visitor Alina Ibragimova. The two were also finalists in the prestigious Gramophone magazine awards for their recordings of Beethoven.
The concert reaches a dramatic climax with Dvořák’s Symphony No.7. Bearing the unmistakable influence of Brahms, the symphony is one of Dvořák’s most powerful works.
Leading the orchestra is Roy Goodman, the APO’s Principal Guest Conductor and a firm favourite with APO audiences.
