Birkenhead Primary School has certainly got the message!

22 November 2011

Birkenhead Primary School has certainly got the message!

For 57 would-be video makers and stars it has been a long wait from term one until the end of term three. And SunSmart week is an appropriate time to announce the winners of the SunSmart Schools video competition.

The competition, run by the Cancer Society, encouraged schools to make a short video on how (or why) their school should be SunSmart. “It is fantastic to see how many children and schools understand the SunSmart messages”, says Cancer Society Auckland CEO John Loof. “Hats and sunscreen are very much a part of everyday life for our school children now and we know that these kinds of preventative behavior will make a significant difference to skin cancer numbers in future years”.

The winners of the Auckland regional competition were Warkworth Primary and Birkenhead Primary Schools. The Cancer Society would like to thank all the schools that have created SunSmart Schools Videos for the competition.

Birkenhead Primary School entered into the Year 5 – 8 Category. The judges said their entry was “creative and captured their attention, it was fun and well thought out”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKeLNAxVG6g

The winning schools each receive an interactive whiteboard resource for their school. Donated by ACTIVboard NZ Ltd and Telecom, the resource pack includes a SunSmart game, UV Index clipart, weblinks to the Cancer Society, MetService and other relevant New Zealand sites as well as a collection of images and text.
