Performance extravaganza at Splore 2012

December 16 2011

Performance extravaganza at Splore 2012

Get ready to immerse yourself in Splore’s three day performance extravaganza. Once again Linz Living Lounge will be home to a sumptuous mix of dance, cabaret, music and interactive performance.

Friday night at Splore will begin with a bang as Vibracorp’s Fluxus Funhouse sets the scene for the weekend. Those bold enough to enter will find themselves on a 20 minute interactive ride through a world of whacky whimsicality- with them as the main attraction.

The night will come to a climax as Splore favourite Doc Westie returns to the festival to cause more chaos. ‘Doc westies bogan circus’ is a home grown celebration of Aotearoa’s hoonish history. It’s a tiki tour of Bogan remixes and circus performance that will feature the Amazing Bing Jugglers, The Country Cougars and their youth tamer, the totally slack-rope walkers, bogan burlesque and trapeze artists swinging from the light fittings.

More performances at Splore:

Le Flagrante:

Le Flagrante is MaryJane O'Reilly's modern and beautifully deviant take on the burlesque revival. Audiences should expect to see six exquisite dancers caught in the act with a fetish for leather, nudity in public and a wild equestrian spirit.

This work takes MaryJane back to her roots as choreographer and artistic director of the seminal Limbs Dance Company. In Le Flagrante MaryJane's cryptic eye for comedic and satiric juxtaposition makes this piece a heady, exhilarating and very sexy romp through some deliciously dark territory.

“I wanted to repudiate some of the orthodoxies of burlesque female sexuality; that women are capable of being bad, not just coquettish avatars” says MaryJane.

The Suitcase Show:

Another must see performance in the Living Lounge is Conrad Coom's Suitcase Show- A kinetic, interactive, award-winning outdoor festival show that is hard to categorise, easy to love and impossible to resist! At the heart of the show are a traveller and his collection of more than 100 vintage suitcases. Aided by an enthusiastic yet hapless porter and the unassuming general public, the traveller moves his cargo around the city – by air, land and sea – in his quest to get off-shore. As the suitcases snake their way through cities and towns, their sculptural forms create moving installations.

The show treats audiences to visual symphony of shape and form, with a sense of arrival and departure conjuring up a spectacle of our peripatetic and migratory lives

The Perky & Fiddle Show:

New to Splore 2012 is The Perky & Fiddle Show. Rhythmic, sexy and completely illegal, The Perky and Fiddle show carries viewers away and exposes a side of gnome life that very few people ever get to see. But watch carefully, they are masters of disguise and you may just miss them…

Bitches Box:

Amelia Guild and Emma Newborn present a story of two dogs holed up in the 'bitches box'. Two ladies at different points in their lives present a very unique and hilarious take of life on the farm. Join them as they explore the lively characters, the strict hierarchy that exists within a pack and the often brutal reality of a working dog’s life.

Sal Valentine and the Babyshakes:

Caught half way between a beat and a gent, and bursting at the seams with debonair charm, the singing sensation Sal Valentine can pack a dance floor anytime, anywhere and backing him at every date is Auckland's number one band 'The Babyshakes' - a hard hitting nine piece ensemble engineered to blow you out of the water.

Suede and The Motel 6:

New York based New Zealand band Labretta Suede and The Motel 6 are returning home to release their new album 'Dirty & Dumb' with their hot new American rhythm section. These bunch of crazed rock ‘n’ rollers have a reckless set and a show of music and outfits that will tease, titillate and leave you wanting more! With a 50s rock ‘n’ roll influence, a twang and some dirge, Labretta Suede and The Motel 6 are an ass whippin’, high kickin’, low down rockin’ an-a-reelin’, high-class outfit.

Blind love story:

A performance for one at a time, once upon a time. Blind love story is a new performance from Campbell Farquhar, who has told stories and performed in previous shows with The Dust Palace. Based on a collage of myths and fairy tales, the blind character Tiresias explores with the aid of a piece of gold thread. He'll need your help to get around and become part of the stories he unravels.

Orchestra of Spheres:

Orchestra of Spheres are channelling ancient future funk and warping spatioelastoplasticity with sound!

Born out of Wellington's Frederick Street Sound and Light Exploration Society in 2009, Orchestra of Spheres has developed a cult-like following in New Zealand Playing house parties, dance parties, DIY shows and opera houses, the Spheres have built a reputation for musically and visually ecstatic live shows Like celestial sponges the Spheres' clonga sound draws on influences from far and wide including kuduro, psychedelic primary school disco, fire music, kwaito, free improv, south pacific demolition and much, much more.
