NZ’s first creative crowdfunding platform PledgeMe will re-launch this month with a brand spanking new website and celebratory party. The online initiative is the brainchild of Wellington-based entrepreneurs Anna Guenther and Camilo Borges, and offers Kiwi creatives alternative options in funding their projects.
In a similar vein
to American crowdfunding giant kickstarter.com, users of
pledgeme.co.nz can post project ideas online for people to
help fund in return for a creative reward. Following its
inception in 2011, more than $10,000 has been raised through
the site, with Wellington band St Rupertsberg raising $1800
in seven days to fund the post-production work on their
first album. The site has also helped secure funding for
post-production work on a documentary featuring Kiwi artists
living in Berlin.
PledgeMe founder Anna Guenther said “…All types of creatives can use PledgeMe - we’ve helped fund projects in film, music, art and journalism and there is potential for so much more. I believe what we’ve seen is just the tip of the iceberg...”
A refurbished version of pledgeme.co.nz will launch on January 25, followed by a shindig at Meow in Wellington on Friday, February 3. Entertainment will include live music from Jeremy Mason, Amy Bowie, Mangle and Gruff and more. Those that arrive before 8pm will get a dollar pledged to the PledgeMe project of their choice.

It has been announced that this year's Big Day Out
will be the last ever on NZ soil. Festival promoter Ken West says the BDO is no longer
financially viable to hold in NZ as well as Australia.
The festival was downsized to four stages this year, seeing
the end of a second main stage, Lily World and the Local
Produce stage. In a press release, West cited the changes as
a goal to recapture the magic of early Big Day Out shows.
The demise of the festival was confirmed last night via the
official BDO twitter account: "This year will be New
Zealand's last Big Day Out. Come party with us this Friday.
It's been an amazing 18 years here in Auckland." A line-up
of local and international acts will lay the iconic festival
to rest this Friday, 20 January at Auckland's Mt Smart
Stadium. Tickets are still available from http://www.bigdayout.co.nz and selected
outlets.

Creative collaborations between musicians and artists have resulted in some of the most memorable pop culture images of the last 50 years. Think iconic images such as Sex Pistols God Save The Queen, or The Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol’s famous collaboration (you know, the banana one). Next week, Beck’s is launching an initiative where local artists will join with local musicians to design a series of limited edition labels for Beck’s bottles. Scratching off any of the labels won’t be an option with artists Rainbow Monkey, Andrew McLeod and Gavin Hurley collaborating with musicians Cut Off Your Hands, Ghost Wave and Parallel Dance Ensemble to each design a series of labels inspired by a song from each band. Beck's has also run a competition in design/media tertiary establishments around New Zealand to find a talented, up-and-coming artist whose work will be featured as part of the campaign on one of the labels. The winner will be announced on January 26th 2012. Not only will over 1.6 million Beck’s bottles be sporting a completely original work of art, but those who purchase a promotional 12 pack can also receive 4 free music downloads of their choice powered by Bandit.fm. It’s the Beck’s Music Shout! And with millions of tracks to choose from, music and art lovers are bound to find tunes to tickle their taste buds as much as the refreshing golden lager inside the bottles. The limited edition bottles will be available in store and in bars for 3 months starting 1st February 2012. http://www.voxy.co.nz/national/becks-enlists-local-help-new-labels/5/112446

Want a slice of NZ Music memorabilia? Or perhaps,
just a door in poor to average condition? Well, you're in
luck! Three doors from the flat that housed members of roots
band Six60 have been put up for auction to raise
money for Dunedin Hospital. The doors were rescued from the
firewood pile by local PlaceMakers owner Justin
Macready after a refurbishment of the 660 Castle St
address - home to three members of the band while studying
at Otago University in 2005. The TradeMe auction is for one
of three doors, complete with two Six60 autographs and
custom artwork, and a signed copy of the band’s platinum
selling debut album. Funds raised will go towards a

New release fanfare
Riding the wake of their successful European summer tour, Batucada Sound Machine return to New Zealand audiences with a new album of road-tested tunes entitled “Don’t Keep Silent”, due for release January 23rd, 2012. In addition, BSM have planned their first ever comprehensive tour of New Zealand to celebrate the album release including a spot at WOMAD 2012. This 10 piece onslaught of pacific-soul, latin, afro-beat and hip-hop have a reputation for their polished, high-energy performance, which has seen them conquer audiences at a host of renowned festivals; including the main stage at Sziget Festival (Hungary), Horizonte Festival and Kulturarena (Germany), Larmer Tree Festival (UK) and the City of London Festival to name a few. The release of Dont Keep Silent comes 3 years after their debut ‘Rhythm & Rhyme’ which received rave reviews both locally and abroad. Band leader and musical director James Hughes explains that this new album, “retains a percussive-heavy approach to our music, but has been developed through a much more collaborative effort by the song-writers”. This has resulted in strong messages, and a spectrum of heavy tunes, introspective tunes, and straight-ahead dance tracks. The album was recorded at The Lab, Auckland (Ollie Harmer) and mixed by Bob ‘Bassy’ Brockman (NYC) and will be released through Border Music and DRM NZ. www.batucadasoundmachine.com

Christian music festival Parachute has cut the
price of their family passes to as low as $1, in a reaction
to the tough economic climate. Traditionally, the family
passes are $460 which cover two parents and up to three
children. The new initiative will offer families, with no
limit on the number of children, the option to pay what they
can afford. The passes are available to any family who would
like to attend the 2012 festival, held at Hamilton’s
Mystery Creek from January 27 - 30. Parachute founder
Mark de Jong says “The last few years have been
tough for the purse strings of Kiwis. 2011 was one of the
worst, between the earthquakes that devastated Christchurch
and the global financial crisis. As organisers of one of the
Southern Hemisphere’s largest music festivals we’ve seen
the effect of these tough financial times on many families."

Group A2IM Offers Different View Of Anti-SOPA Protests
It's not just the RIAA and big music companies that support SOPA. In another example of the divisions within the music and media industries over proposed anti-piracy legislation and today's anti-SOPA protests, the American Association Of Independent Music (A2IM) today offered this statement:
"Today a number of websites are
shutting down in protest of proposed anti-piracy
legislation. They are taking a unilateral action to make
their content unavailable. However, under current law, A2IM
members whose copyrights are infringed upon cannot take
similar action. Our independent labels and their artists
have no practical way of taking down illegal links to their
music from rogue foreign websites accessed via U.S. search
engines.
We urge these search engines to support U.S. content creators by working toward anti-piracy legislation acceptable to all. Let's have a debate that genuinely acknowledges that the voices within our joint communities are deep, broad and diverse and let's all agree that doing nothing is not an option.
The media has portrayed the issue as that of two giant industries (movies & music and technology) in conflict, as though this was a battle solely between very rich businesses. In fact, our members are small and medium sized independent businesses that invest in the creation of music and whose very existence is being threatened by the availability of illegal content online. We look forward to solution-oriented discussions among all parties."
