Fish & Game Stamps Mark on Habitat Protection

Fish & Game Stamps Mark on Habitat Protection

February 2, 2012

Fish & Game New Zealand today launched the new game bird habitat stamp collection to mark World Wetland Day celebrations.

The Game Bird Habitat Stamp Programme is designed to raise funds - from the sale of the annual stamp and related products - for the protection and enhancement of game bird habitat.

This is the 19th in the New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Collection series, and features the least common of New Zealand’s upland game birds, the bobwhite quail.

New Zealand Post releases the Game Bird Stamp on behalf of Fish & Game New Zealand. The stamp is not valid for postage but funds collected go towards habitat protection.

Two first day covers featuring the stamp and a miniature sheet with full art work are produced for stamp collectors. Numbered, limited-edition prints, signed by the artist are also sold accompanied by two stamps, one also signed by the artist.

Fish & Game is one of New Zealand’s leading players in both advocating for, and protecting and enhancing wetland habitats.

“We have long recognised that the key to sustainable management and harvest of game birds is good habitat – look after the habitat and the birds and fish will look after themselves,” says communications advisor Grant Dyson.

Buying habitat stamp programme items is a simple and practical way of giving direct support to habitat protection. Click here for more information on the Game Bird Habitat Collection.

This programme is administered by the New Zealand Fish and Game Council. Once costs have been recovered, the net funds are transferred to the New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Trust Board to apply for the protection, enhancement or creation of game bird and other wildlife habitat.

The Game Bird Habitat Trust has been influential in supporting many projects by recognising that often all that is needed to enable a project to go ahead is a modest grant.
