Don't doubt a FebFaster
It’s time for people who doubted their FebFasting friends to swallow their pride and donate a bit of cash, says FebFast Coordinator Catherine Milburn.
With just one day left of FebFast, FebFasters should be hitting up their friends to donate to this awesome cause,” she says.
FebFast finishes today, 29 February, although the Drug Foundation will continue taking donations right through until the end of March.
Ms Milburn says about 700 people have taken part in FebFast this year.
“They've done fantastically well,” she says. “Some people have done FebFast on their own while others have formed teams with mates or work colleagues.
“As well as experiencing the benefits of a month without alcohol, they've also been raising thousands of dollars for organisations doing really valuable community work.”
Auckland FebFaster Andrew Grear says the month has gone better than he expected.
“The month has given me a great sense of personal satisfaction in know that I can, when all is said and done, cope quite easily with nothing more than a soft drink in my hand,” he says.
“Surprisingly the most difficult times have not been when I'm with other people but when I've been relaxing at home. Normally I might pour myself a glass of wine and so being denied that was more difficult than expected.
“While I wouldn't want to do this for too long, I think by next year I'll be more than ready to participate again!”
Money raised from FebFast will be used to support four charities working with young people affected by alcohol or drug issues: Evolve (Wellington), Rainbow Youth (Auckland), CareNZ (Waikato), and the ADHD Association (national).
People can make donations by visiting the FebFast website at www.febfast.org.nz and can also text FebFast to 5338 to make an instant $3 donation.
