March 31, 2012
13-YEAR-OLD OREWA COLLEGE student Dana Lawson has landed the “gig of a lifetime”, having won the inaugural Quest for the Best high schools anthem competition.
Dana, of Hatfield’s Beach, will perform in front of a massive live crowd at Western Springs on March 31 and will be beamed around the world to a TV audience in its hundreds of millions, tuned into the first round of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix.
Dana wowed celebrity judges Tina Cross and Tim Beveridge during her audition. 25 students from throughout the Auckland region competed for the chance to sing our national song at the event.
Dana has been taking singing lessons for just two years and has already landed lead roles in her school’s productions as well as performed solos at school assembles.
“I first started singing in front of people when I was nine,” she reveals. “I am very passionate about singing and I love it. I am thrilled and honoured to be performing at the Grand Prix.”
The event, New Zealand’s most exciting motor racing event of 2012, will pit 16 of the world’s top speedway riders against each other in attempt to secure vital points going into the next round.
The riders will represent the USA, Sweden, Poland, Australia, Denmark, Russia, New Zealand and Great Britain, providing plenty of thrills for speedway fans and motor racing enthusiasts.
The event will be the first meeting of the
12-round world championship FIM Speedway Grand Prix series
(SGP) that returns to the southern hemisphere for the first
time in nearly a
decade.
