WOW Off the Wall exhibition a ‘beacon of light and creativity’ for Canterbury
The World of WearableArt Off the Wall:WearableArt Up Close exhibition has been a beacon of light and creativity when Canterbury needed it, according to the Christchurch Mayor, and he encourages the rest of New Zealand to go and see it when it reaches their town.
Last weekend saw the final weekend of the WOW Off the Wall exhibition at the Canterbury Museum. The exhibition is a two year New Zealand tour of a selection of WOW’s very best garments from its historic collection.
An astonishing 207,617 visitors have gone through the Christchurch exhibition since it opened on December 2.
Christchurch Mayor, Bob Parker, says it has been wonderful to have an exhibition of this calibre in the heart of Christchurch.
“It has been very important for Christchurch to have had this beacon of light and creativity in the city,’ Parker says. “It was fantastic that the World of WearableArt was able to keep Christchurch as the opening venue for the New Zealand tour.
“More importantly, the high number of local visitors to the museum showed that the exhibition was just what Cantabrians needed,” he says.
Canterbury Museum Director Anthony Wright agrees the exhibition has been good for the city.
“We’ve loved hosting the crowds of Cantabrians and tourists, who have come in to marvel at the amazing World of WearableArt exhibition,” Wright says. “It’s been a great success and visitor feedback says it has been a vibrant and spirit-lifting experience.”
The exhibition is now being carefully packed away and will make its journey onto the Southland Museum in Invercargill. This second show, in a total of six nationwide exhibitions, will run from 7 April – 17 June.
