Mapua artist heading to international conference in England

When NZ artist, Lisa Chandler, spotted a news item about an international conference on 'Affected Landscapes' late last year she didn't think for a minute that she would be invited to be a part of it.

Having completed her MFA from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, and set a new path and style for her paintings, Lisa put forward a proposal based on an urban wandering project which she will undertake in Kuala Lumpur this April. Her paper and her paintings caught the eye of the conference managers and an invitation followed to attend and present a short paper as part of a panel.

The conference, to be held in Derby, UK, will include 72 international speakers, by invitation, and the theme has attracted strong academic and general interest on the interaction between place, or non-place, and the psyche of the individual. Speakers will include specialists from the fields of cultural studies, literary studies, cultural politics/history, creative writing, film and media studies, photography and fine art.

Lisa will be the only participant from New Zealand. She looks forward to broadening and challenging her artist's view of society and to learning more about the sociology and psycho-geography that underpins these concepts. While in the UK for this conference Lisa will also hold an exhibition of her work in Derby.

Before this Lisa will explore the complexities of the city of Kuala Lumpur - a city she chose for the urban wandering which inspires her art. She comments:

“This is a very busy time for me as an artist. I have an exciting creative project to embark on next month in Malaysia, and then the opportunity to share and test my thoughts and concepts at the Affected Landscapes conference and exhibition in England. I feel my work has really turned a corner and I am buoyed by the support I have received from the local arts community.”

Lisa is currently exhibiting her large scale works at Reflections Art Gallery with photographer Cindy Flook until 22nd April. 1 Cadillac Way, Nelson. Open daily 10am-5pm. Free Entry.
