NZ COMEDY TRUST PRESENTS
BEST OF THE BILLYS
THE YELLOW TOWELED CUZZIES UNITE!
Billy T James’ timeless cheeky comedy is as much part of the culture as jandals and “fush‘n’chups”. The iconic Yellow Towel that frequently adorned James has become an iconic status symbol in the comedy world. The Billy T Award acknowledges the best up-and-coming New Zealand comedian performing in the NZ International Comedy Festival and honours the memory of Billy T and what he did for comedy in this country.
King stubbie-wearer and 2002 Billy T Award-winner Dai Henwood hosts an evening starring those who have won the right to don the yellow towel. This two-hour comedy showcase features some of the best Kiwi talent performing killer sets and showing why they won the award in the first place!
Brendhan Lovegrove (Billy T Award Winner - 1998), a staple of the New Zealand comedy scene and star of A Night At The Classic, will take to the stage to deliver his trademark dosages of observational, acerbic humour.
The Boy With Tape On His Face a.k.a Sam Wills, (Billy T Award Winner - 2005), is a fine example of how important the award is for promoting homegrown talent. After selling out during last year’s Festival, he’s gone on to achieve five-star reviews across the globe, was been named Best Breakthrough Act by Chortle.co.uk and starred in the Royal Variety Performance in 2011.
Also joining the line-up is 2008 Billy T Award Winner Steve Wrigley. He’s a man with more than his fair share of talents. Not only is he a prolific stand-up comedian, he’s appeared on 7 Days, The Jono Project, and A Night At The Classic. To top it off, Steve is also starring in his very own comedy musical, Kevin The Musical, at The Herald Theatre this Festival.
The most recent winner of the Billy T Award (2011), Nick Gibb joins this esteemed line-up. His 2011 show, Pakehas Be All Like This, also earned fantastic reviews; including one from the Edinburgh Guide, “Brilliantly original material… I would be very surprised if Nick Gibb wasn’t a name with serious clout in the comedy world in the near future.”
With more Billy T Award-winning comedians still to be announced…
