RECORD STORE DAY
Real Groovy (now in its 31st year) have announced that this year on (International) Record Store Day they will be the first New Zealand record store to release a vinyl album especially for the occasion.
Strictly limited to 400 copies in two colours - 200 of each, on black and pink vinyl – Real Groovy will release a double album capturing the legendary Toy Love performing one of their last live shows – nearly 32 years ago on Friday 12th September 1980 at The Gluepot in Ponsonby, Auckland. Transferred and prepared for vinyl mastering by Steve McGough at Stebbings from a desk tape recorded by Toy Love’s front of house soundman Doug Hood, the record has been pressed in Nashville at United Record Pressing.
Toy Love are: Chris Knox, Jane Walker, Paul Kean, Mike Dooley and Alec Bathgate.
Record Store Day 2012 will be a festive event with the release of the Toy Love Live At The Gluepot LP, local bands performing live (playing a Toy Love song or two) and prizes galore. This is the first boutique release, but probably not the last, on vinyl by the store.

Songs From The
Inside follows New Zealand musicians Warren
Maxwell, Maisey Rika, Ruia Aperahama and
Anika Moa, who went into Rimutaka and
Arohata correction facilities to teach songwriting to
prisoners. Directed by Julian Arahanga
(Once Were Warriors’ Nig Heke) the musicians taught 10
prisoners the step-by-step music programme developed by
Evan Rhys Davies – a pilot programme he
had tutored at Spring Hill Corrections Facility in the
Waikato. There will be a thirteenth, hour-long special in
which the songs the prisoners wrote, sang and recorded will
be revealed. Music therapy is used in prisons throughout the
world, but Songs From The Inside is the first production to
bring in established musicians and record the workshops,
challenges and outcomes on film. The show screens
Sundays 8:00pm, and if you've missed it so far,
repeats Fridays at 10.30pm from 20 April. Read

New release
fanfare
Savage returns to
the ring with an aggressive selection of new material in the
form of The Orator EP available
digitally Monday 16 April. Recorded In Hollywood, Los
Angeles at famed producer and rapper DJ
Quik’s “The Vault” Studio, The Orator
title is a nod to the film of the same name that resonated
with Savage as a modern day public speaker; one who is
eloquent and skilled in story telling like his Samoan
ancestors. To capture and reflect the images of being a
Polynesian artist surrounded by a new concrete village, and
now with a platform to reach millions of fans via hissuccess
in the US, Savage enlisted a ‘who’s who’ of US-based
Polynesian Hip Hop artists to give a The Orator a
2012 snapshot of life in different Polynesian neighbourhoods
around the world. Produced by Twice As Nice
and featuring Monsta G, Ganxsta
Ridd (Boo Yaa Tribe), Baby
Downn (Brownzville),
Shaxe and Jah Free, The
Orator EP is Savage’s first set of all new material
since the US release of Tribal Council in 2011, and
sets up the release of his brand new full length studio
album Miracles & Mayhem, available on June 1st. In
the lead up to the EP, Savage has made two tracks from
The Orator available to fans for FREE download on
Soundcloud. Get your copies here:

Following the release of their single “Journey” in November, Cornerstone Roots spent the summer capturing a day in the life of 12 year-old band member, Reiki Ruawai. Filmed in their hometown of Raglan, Reiki is followed on his own journey to the legendary waves of the Whaingaroa coastline. “Journey” is a reflective song about how we respond to life’s ups and downs”, says bandleader Brian Ruawai. After a busy summer bringing their conscious roots reggae to audiences at Kaikoura Roots Festival, Raggamuffin and One Drop, Cornerstone Roots are proud to feature the son of band members Brian Ruawai and Naomi Tuaopepe in their stunning new video. Journey is the first single off their fourth studio album due for release later in the year. Watch Journey
To mark their 25th anniversary as a band, Kiwi country/folk legends The Warratahs will release a re-mastered compilation of their best bits, as well as a five track EP of new material. 'The Warratahs 25 Year Collection' is a 19-track best-of, with tracks dating back to their 1987 release ‘Only Game In Town’ through to 2006's 'Keep On'. To celebrate the album’s release through Ode Records on April 20, The Warratahs will embark on a six-date tour of the country in May. Find tour dates here.
The debut album by The Shifting Sands is the kind of psychedelic pop they love at Fishrider Records, alternating between the dreamy and the urgent. While the hyper-melodic jangle-pop sometimes references the “Dunedin sound” for some listeners, the injection of synthesizer and even sitar into the mix turns everything on its head. As indeed does the balance of extremes provided by the almost weightless floating-on-air of the title track “Feel” or “Whatever we Can” against the surging Eastern drone-pop of “The Kitchen Sink” or the insistent drive of “Tonight”or “Worth our While”. What began as a solo album by Mike McLeod turned into collaboration with many of Dunedin’s finest musicians past and present, including David Kilgour (The Clean), Tony de Raad & Tom Bell (both of David Kilgour & the Heavy Eights), Robert Scott (The Clean, The Bats), Robbie Yeats (The Verlaines, The Dead C), Lesley Paris (Look Blue Go Purple), Jay Clarkson (The Expendables, Breathing Cage), and Rob Falconer (Operation Rolling Thunder). Production duties were shared between Tex Houston (The 3Ds -Hellzapoppin, The Clean - Mister Pop) Thomas Bell (The Clean - Getaway, David Kilgour and Sam Hunt - Falling Debris, Left by Soft), and McLeod himself. The Shifting Sands has grown to become an entrancing live band. Mike McLeod, Tom Bell and drummer Jake Langley will be taking the album on the road during April. The album - released 2 April 2012 - will be distributed by Yellow Eye music. It can also be listened to, downloaded and the CD ordered from Bandcamp - http://theshiftingsands.bandcamp.com/
The highly respected Conscious Roots series comprises a mixture of classic roots, fused styles, genre busters and beautiful raw acoustic songs. It showcases the fertile roots music scene in New Zealand. The philosophy of this compilation series is that we should give voice to the spirit within and develop our own roots genre rather than following overseas musical trends. The 30 tracks on 'The Best of Conscious Roots' bring together highlights from all five volumes - a diverse range of musical bliss from Aotearoa. Artists on this special 2-disc set include Unity Pacific, Katchafire, The Black Seeds, Cornerstone Roots, Trinity Roots, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Che-Fu, Tiki Taane, Hollie Smith and many more. Sinate are heading out on tour to
celebrate the release of their latest album To The Death. To The Death is Sinate like you've never heard them
before. The band which released their first two albums
barely a year apart may have taken some time to put out this
record, but the final product has only benefitted. With
Sweden-based Pelle Seather (Corporation 187, Carnal Forge)
taking care of production duties for a second time, this
recording has that monster production the swedish metal
releases are revered for and at the same time sees Sinate
reach new heights in terms of song writing and
technicality.
