Few artists are as beautiful as the sound they make. Kiwi songstress Elizabeth Marvelly is an exception.
This young lady’s beauty isn’t simply skin-deep; her love of life is infectious and her passion for New Zealand and its people belies her years.
Meet her, and you’ll understand why. You’re instantly drawn to her warm, engaging smile, her bubbly, enthusiastic personality. Elizabeth Marvelly is confident, intelligent and talented. At 22, she is almost a veteran, having spent six years touring and performing around the world.
Taken to the national stage in 2006 at the age of 16 by Sir Howard Morrison, recording her critically acclaimed debut album in 2007 with Carl Doy, touring Australasia in 2008 and then Europe in 2009 with Britain’s Got Talent opera phenomenon Paul Potts, performing to crowds numbering in the millions at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House; Elizabeth Marvelly’s musical life has been a wonderful ride.
She followed this up last year with the launch of her critically acclaimed album Home. The album was as much a statement about the artist as it was a tribute to the wonderful songs written by the New Zealand artists who have influenced her over the years.
With elegant versions of ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ by Crowded House and ‘Welcome Home’ by Dave Dobbyn through to grand, stirring renditions of traditional Maori songs, ‘E Papa’, ‘Tarakihi’; the beautiful duality of ‘How Great Thou Art (Whakaaria Mai)’ and ‘Amazing Grace’ (Te Atua), and the timeless classics of Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’, Caccini’s ‘Ave Maria’, plus ‘I Vow To Thee My Country’, ‘The Prayer’ (featuring Paul Potts) and ‘Over the Rainbow (I’m Always Chasing Rainbows)’, the album soared as high as her voice on the New Zealand music charts.
What a year 2011 turned out to be. On the eve of this album launch, Christchurch was rocked by a deadly earthquake. Nature’s havoc became a catalyst for Elizabeth to mobilise performers and industry experts to stage a charity concert that would raise $115,000 for the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal and unite communities wracked by grief and a feeling of helplessness. While a long way away from the devastation, the concert demonstrated an allegiance to a city in crisis.
Elizabeth followed this Herculean effort with stellar performances of the New Zealand National Anthem at the All Blacks’ Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup matches in 2011 and the NZ Warriors’ NRL Grand Final match against the Manly Sea Eagles. She had become the No. 1 choice among our national sporting codes to sing the anthem and was an obvious choice to sing during New Zealand’s biggest sporting event ever, the Rugby World Cup.
If that wasn’t enough excitement for one year, she capped it off with a performance with Paul Potts in front of 15,000 fans in Taiwan.
"2011, while a year of incredible highs, was coloured by the devastation of the Christchurch earthquake. Throughout the year, however, I felt immensely proud of our wonderful country. We suffered terribly through the loss of many of our brothers and sisters in Christchurch but together we managed to find a way to pick ourselves up and get on with the job ahead, grieving for those we lost and rebuilding one of our most beautiful cities. I learnt many valuable life lessons and I truly believe that we must take every day and make the most of it."
2012 sees her embarking on a heartland tour of her beloved New Zealand and heading back into the studio to record her third album.
