Variety Concert Remembers Fijian Flood Victims

Victims of the recent Fijian flood will be remembered during a special fundraising concert held in Palmerston North on Saturday, May 12.

The Fiji Flood Appeal is a colourful variety concert put on by the Manawatu Indian community. The concert will feature traditional song and dance, food and drink stalls, tributes and video segments to those affected by the April flooding.

Concert organiser Sunny Olak says that he hopes many people will attend the concert.

"Fiji has suffered from terrible flooding this year, first in January then again last month. The April flood has been described as the worst in living history and has affected most Fijians in some way. Schools, power lines, roads, shops and homes have been struck down. We hope that the funds we raise will help these people get their lives back on track. Domino's Palmerston North has also come on board to help out, and will contribute to the appeal through their Doughraiser programme."

Domino's Pizza New Zealand general manager Josh Kilimnik says that a dollar from every pizza sold at the Palmerston North store on Wednesday, May 16 will go towards the appeal.

"The flooding in Fiji has had a devastating effect on their economy and society. Many people have lost their homes and livelihoods. Every dollar that we contribute from the Palmerston North Doughraiser on May 16 will go towards relief efforts. I hope Manawatu residents will be touched by this special appeal and dig deep to help victims of the flood," says Kilimnik.

Olak says that the concert will be a great night out for families, and a chance for people to immerse themselves in Fijian culture and try some traditional snacks and food. People will also have a chance to find out more about the flooding, and other ways they can help.

"We have set up a Facebook page that the public can visit. Fijians are currently in the rebuilding phase so anything we can contribute will help. The concert is only $15 per person and kids under 10 get in for free. You can also donate further by buying Lovo fundraising packages which you can pre-order or buy during the concert. All proceeds go towards Fiji flood victims," says Olak.

The Domino's Doughraiser programme has raised thousands of dollars for various charities, including Kidscan, so far this year. Kilimnik says that Doughraisers are a way for Domino's to give back to the community.

"Our stores are always happy to assist local community groups, charities, schools and sporting clubs with their fundraising needs - big or small. We hope to show Kiwis by our actions that we really care about our local communities. One of those actions this year, which has received huge customer support, has been the removal of the public holiday surcharge from our menu. Customers can now buy pizza for the same price at any day of the year, with no extra cost."
