Sweet Explorations at Pixel Ink Gallery
Pixel Ink Gallery presents new works from five of Wellington's most exciting female illustrative artists opening on Saturday the 2nd of June.
The group exhibition titled Sweet Explorations features original paintings from Rosalind Clark, Rachel Walker, Devon Smith, Lucy Yu and Kelly Spencer.
Exhibition curator and artist Rosalind Clark said the group show visually explores the artist's interpretation of desire.
“The artist brief for the exhibition could be any subject matter so long as it holds an element of desirability,” says Clark.
Artworks featured depict candy and yummy treats, figurative projections, exotic animals, wondrous beauties and crystal seascapes.
“Each artist brings their own unique twist to the exhibition and holds their own ideas both literally and conceptually,” says Clark.
Clark was one of 70 artists from 40 counties featured in this years Curvy – An annual of the world's most exciting female illustrators and artists.
Walker, Smith, Yu, Spencer and Clark have all previously exhibited at Pixel Ink.

The group show Sweet Explorations runs from 2 June to 30 June at Pixel Ink Gallery, 219 Cuba Street, Wellington.

Artist Biography – Rosalind Clark
As an illustrator and artist, Rosalind Clark combines the charm of sketched line with the truth fullness of photo media as the foundation of her contemporary practice. Her work is typically narrative and figurative, communicating deep emotive and metaphorical themes. She experiments with collage to achieve a balance of rough vs. detailed imagery. The result is a unique and engaging style developed through her academic study. She employs traditional, digital and mixed media techniques to capture the audience using visual communication. Rosalind’s work is whimsical, ethereal, emotive and raw.
Artist Biography – Rachel Walker
Rachel Walker is an artist and illustrator born in New Zealand, sometimes living amongst bushes laden with tui’s and magpie’s, and sometimes on clifftops where cats chase seagulls. Since obtaining her Bachelor of Visual Communication Design in Illustration in 2008, Rachel has taken part in various group exhibitions around Wellington, illustrated for various clients, and in 2010 held her first solo show ‘Jellyfish Crossroads’ at Pixel Ink Gallery.
Artist Biography – Devon Smith
Devon Smith is a painter and illustrator based in Wellington. After four years of study in Dunedin, Devon received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and moved to Wellington to work as an exhibiting artist and freelance illustrator. Devon’s work reflects the emphasis she places on drawing, a process she sees as fundamentally important for the creation of her paintings. Working dominantly in gouache, watercolour and pencil her paintings have a dreamy ethereal quality which lends itself well to her delicate characters.
Artist Biography – Lucy Yu
Lucy Yu studied art from a young age, and has always been most drawn towards the human face and form. In recent years this has evolved into allusive, whimsical visions that are part portraiture, part surrealist fantasy. In 2009 she received her Bachelor of Arts in the study of Film and Art History, from the University of Auckland. Since then she has moved to Wellington, settled very happily, and continues her work within Art History academia, while also pursuing her various artistic endeavours.
Artist Biography – Kelly Spencer
Kelly Spencer freelances in the fields of illustration and design. Her love of music is expressed through t-shirt and branding design for bands and festivals. Kelly discovered her niche in watercolour which delivers a perfect contrast of concentration and unpredictability. She gets great satisfaction out of laying on the paint thick, wet, and bright.
