Sports greats team up to inspire youth

Current Breakers basketball sensation Dillon Boucher has joined sports legend Eroni Clarke in a panel discussion on the value of sport, its influence and impact on today’s youth.

The two are guest speakers at Inspire, an Ignite Sport event on Monday 18 June 2012 at Petone Working Men’s Club, Lower Hutt.

“Too often we see high-profile sports people tripping up off the field,” says Ignite Sport Coordinator Kevin Goldsbury.“To achieve well on and off the field young people must be coached in both sport and life.”

Ignite Sport offers schools in the Wellington area a unique concept: In addition to focussing on training, fitness and skills development the organisation encourages young sports people to consider character, values, balance and heart.The programmes begin with a Sports Academy for Year 9 or 10 students and continue to Year 13 with Sports Ambassadors and Sports Leaders programmes.

The charity organisation is currently working in seven schools within the Wellington area (predominantly low-decile schools) and has been invited into several more.College Sport Wellington also wants Ignite Sport’s volunteer coaching programme, Sports Serve, to operate throughout the region.Schools are desperate for volunteer coaching help.

Retired Tall Black Dillon and former All Black Clarke offered to support Ignite Sport’s profile and fund-raising event.They recognise the benefits achieved by the initiative, which gives so much back to youth and the community in general, through sport.At Inspire they will discuss the ways young athletes can develop as people and players.

Dillon Boucher: Member of New Zealand Breakers basketball team which won back-to-back NBL titles with a thrilling victory over the Perth Wildcats in April 2012. Now retired from the Tall Blacks, Boucher has eight New Zealand titles.

Eroni Clarke: Eroni has been a stalwart of New Zealand rugby, playing at Provisional, Super 12 and National Level for more than 12 years. He played a total of 24 matches for the All Blacks including 10 tests between 1992 to 1998.

Eroni is an ambassador for Heart Children Foundation and is also involved in TYLA (Turn Your Life Around), a program which aims to improve the youth of today.

Under the umbrella of Takanga A Fohe, Pacific Mental Health at the Waitemata DHB, he works to deliver Pacific Health services through the team at Tupu as an AOD & Gambling Clinician.
