Lockwood Still on Top After Tough Weekend
Matt Lockwood has held onto his championship lead of the V8 Challenge Cup after a tough weekend at Round 4 of the Supertourer’s at Hampton Downs.
Battling a flu and throat infection, Lockwood went into the weekend with a 360 point lead and came out with a 150 point lead over Hugh Gardiner.
“We qualified third for the first race on Saturday, which I was happy with. Pole would have been nice but there was .07 of a second covering the top three so we had the pace to race up the front,” said Lockwood.
Race one saw Lockwood in the Placemakers Ford Falcon have a good clean race and finished 2nd just behind race winner Hugh Gardiner.
In the reverse top 5 race two, Lockwood started in 4th place. Another competitor out braked themselves, made heavy contact with Lockwood, and pushed him off line forcing him back to sixth. Lockwood managed to get back up to 2nd position with one lap to go.
However missing his braking marker coming into turn 5 and, after hitting the rear of the race leader, beached his car in the sand trap causing him not to finish.
Race three saw Lockwood starting 6th on the grid.
A victim of others misfortune saw Lockwood cop an undeserved drive through penalty, serving it on lap four. Coming out of pit lane in seventh, Lockwood stormed through the field to finish 3rd, getting the four fastest laps of the race.
“We had a shocking weekend, we lost a lot of points due to not finishing race 2 but still have a comfortable lead and plan to extend that at the next round.”
The next round for Lockwood is Round 5 of the V8 Supertourer’s at Taupo in September.
