dtr celebrates its 50th birthday by raising money for charity Shine
25 June 2012 – As local retailer dtr marks its 50th anniversary this year, the company is celebrating by giving its birthday presents to Shine.
Shine is New Zealand’s largest non-government organisation providing specialist services addressing domestic abuse in the country.
Shine advocates deal closely with victims; offering a callout service, provide emergency accommodation to women and children who are fearful to live in their own homes, coordinate security upgrades and also provide on-going support for high-risk victims of abuse and their kids.
dtr’s Managing Director Mark Spring recently presented the $8,614 cheque donation at a low-key event at Shine’s Kingsland headquarters.
To support Shine’s vital work in the community, dtr raised the money through a range of fundraising activities held during its birthday celebration events.
A charity auction was held in the corporate lounge at dtr’s Warriors Match Day on April 15, while dtr staff with donation buckets circulated amongst the crowd. Mr Spring also promised to donate $50 from dtr for every point scored by the Warriors and Rabbitohs to Shine.
Unfortunately for the Rabbitohs, but fortunately for Shine, the Warriors had a high scoring game and their 44 – 22 win over the visitors earned $3,300 for the charity.
dtr also donated an Air New Zealand ‘luxury escape for two’ on Trade Me, declaring that all proceeds would go to Shine, which ended up selling for $1,200.
Jane Drumm, Executive Director of Shine says she is immensely pleased with the support they have received from dtr, and is looking forward to continuing this great relationship in the future.
“The support shown by dtr through their 50th birthday celebrations has been inspiring. We were honoured that they chose us as the recipient of their efforts to give back to the community for this milestone,” says Ms Drumm.
“Everything makes a difference, and this gift will make a huge difference in the lives of those families we work with.”
Mr Spring says hitting 50 is a significant milestone for any company, but being able to share dtr’s celebrations with a charity like Shine, has made it all the more special for his staff.
Fifty years ago this month, TV became available to the majority of New Zealanders who couldn’t afford to buy one outright, thanks to dtr’s pioneering business model.
April 1962 was the month when the iconic New Zealand company started renting TVs to Kiwis. Known at the time as Dominion Television Services, the store was opened by entrepreneur Stan Pemberton, who saw an opportunity to help New Zealanders that couldn’t afford the upfront £130 ($4,500 today) ticket price of what was at the time the ultimate luxury consumer tech item – a 23-inch ‘consolette’ black and white television.
Since those early days, the services of dtr have continued to be in demand, and the company has now grown to a network of 22 stores nationwide.
