KAHA: collection of unmissible dance comes to South Auckland
KAHA – the breathtaking new collection of unmissible dance comes to South Auckland!
After a stellar sell out season in Auckland’s Q Theatre last month, Atamira Dance Company’s dynamic and powerful collection of short works that is KAHA takes to the South Auckland stage this 17th & 19th of July.
"New Zealand contemporary dance at its most innovative."
Keeping Up With The Grid, Ingrid Grenar, KAHA 2012
KAHA’s exhilarating selection of eight short works unites hallowed, established works from leading choreographers Moss Patterson, Taane Mete and Jack Gray alongside some commanding new works that include a contemporary version of the mighty HAKA performed by by a full cast of professional dancers.
"The talent and grace of Atamira's dancers is inspiring to watch [...] each movement and word and facial expression [...] felt as a physical force."
Gather and Hunt, Courteney Peters, KAHA 2012
Drawing from the personal experiences of their performers and whakapapa, KAHA boldly exudes a passion for storytelling rivalled by a few. The unique, important voice of Atamira Dance Company as Maori in New Zealand has become more important now than ever – KAHA channels these stories through unprecedented contemporary dance that critics and audiences alike have come to expect from the choreographers, the dancers and the company itself.
"Atamira are in fine form..."
NZ Herald, Raewyn Whyte, KAHA 2012
KAHA sees the return of prominent works Haka, Moko, Piata and Mitimiti from Patterson, Mete & Gray. Originally drawing universal acclaim from critics and audiences earlier this year with their season of Hou, these four works set the tone for what has been called an “atmospheric and intense” special feature excerpt from Ngai Tahu 32, choreographed by former Atamira member, the renowned Louise Potiki-Bryant.
KAHA also presents a high-vibe work, performed to Dub-step music from award winning choreographer Kelly Nash, who has previously worked with the likes of Douglas Wright and Shona McCullagh. The evening also shows its up-to-speed with modern pop culture, with a full stage version of “Poi E Thriller” – as seen in the smash hit Kiwi movie Boy, and choreographed once again by long-standing Atamira member Dolina Wehipeihana. Combining Kapa Haka and Michael Jackson moves, this piece will get the crowd singing and dancing, POI E!
"Sparkled gloves, 80s high street fashion, pelvic thrusts, wiri, pukana, and glitter... ".
Theatreview, Tia Reihana, KAHA 2012
KAHA is an exciting, high calibre contemporary dance show supported by kiwi electronic music, original acoustic recordings; live waiata, and haka! This is unmissable dance at its best!
