Full season of Monday gallops confirmed

A full season of Monday thoroughbred racing meetings is one of the notable aspects of the new season’s racing calendar.

The 2012/13 calendar has been released by the New Zealand Racing Board following consultation with NZ Thoroughbred Racing, Harness Racing NZ, Greyhound Racing NZ, industry groups and racing clubs throughout the country.

Following the introduction of Monday domestic gallops meetings toward the latter stages of last season, 2012/13 comprises a full programme of Monday thoroughbred racing.

The initiative ensures consistency in domestic and international wagering opportunities, with racing now available every day each week.

The majority of traditional race dates for the 2012/13 season remain unchanged from previous seasons.

The Spring Classic will be run on Saturday, October 6, at Hastings, with the New Zealand Cup and Show Week in Christchurch scheduled for November 10-17.

Next year’s Wellington Cup Day will be held on Saturday, January 26, while Auckland Cup Week runs from Friday, March 1, to Saturday, March 9. The Melbourne Cup will be run on the traditional first Tuesday in November, this year being November 6.

The Harness Jewels return to Ashburton on Saturday, June 1.

A number of domestic racing clubs will again participate in the NZ Racing Board-led Interislander Summer Festival, Christmas at the Races and the newly created Mid-Winter Christmas events this coming season. There will be 46 Christmas at the Races events, 36 Interislander Summer Festival events and 12 Mid-Winter Christmas events in 2012/13.
