Kiwis pair representing NZ at world's biggest McDonald’s

Kiwis pair representing New Zealand working at biggest McDonald’s on the planet:

Tokoroa’s Hone Wilson and Whangarei’s Marilou Embling are representing New Zealand at the London Olympics, but not as competitors. The pair were selected to fly to London to work in the biggest McDonald’s on the planet, right in the middle of Olympic Park.

The vast two-story restaurant will serve up to 1,200 customers an hour and sell £3million of food during the Games. At 3,000 square feet, the building which is next to the Olympic Stadium, is bigger than the current largest McDonald’s in Moscow. There are 20 till points and 1,500 seats.

Hone and Marilou will be among the 2,000 staff from around the world employed at the restaurant.

They were chosen from more than 1,000 McDonald’s shift managers in NZ to work in the restaurant. Return airfares, accommodation and tickets to some Olympic events are also part of the prize package.

The selection process was rigorous and included mystery shoppers in restaurants and a presentation to McDonald’s NZ’s managing director and senior management team.

The McDonalds experiencing the Olympics with McDonald’s

In an act of pure coincidence, Auckland’s McDonald family will depart this week for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the London 2012 Olympic Games through a search run by McDonald’s to find New Zealand’s Champions of Play.

The quick service restaurant launched the nationwide competition to encourage children and their families to get inventive by uploading images of themselves doing Olympic Games related activities. The photos could include families getting involved in Olympic Games sports or re-enactments of New Zealand’s most iconic historical moments at the Olympic Games.

And the winning family just happened to be the McDonalds.

Bill McDonald and his wife Sarah, photographed their children Duncan (8) and Sylvie (6) in a winning Olympic pose using a paint-splattered sheet, an ironing board and some garden spades.

The family of four are also taking the opportunity to extend the trip and travel throughout Europe – something they wouldn’t have done without winning the prize. They are obviously thoroughly excited about the trip and the chance to cheer for their countries. Not only will there be competition at the games, but also within the family as mother Sarah is a Kiwi, but her husband Bill is from Australia.

McDonald’s New Zealand, plus all 53 franchisees are excited to be able to provide the family with such an amazing experience. McDonald’s wants to encourage active balanced lifestyles which is why the company is long-term sponsors of junior sport in many local communities across the country, as well as being a sponsor of the Olympic Games for 35 years.

The London 2012 Olympic Games prize package includes return airfares for a family of four to London, three nights’ accommodation in London’s Lancaster Hotel; including access to an exclusive playroom for the kids, tickets to two London 2012 Games events and a range of local sightseeing activities.
