Honest to God By Philip Braithwaite
Honest to God By Philip Braithwaite
Issues of faith and its relation to personal freedom are at the forefront of world affairs today and freely spoken about in New Zealand. In the 1960s an article questioning the historical accuracy of the bible and the harm caused by religious fundamentalism, penned by academic Lloyd Geering, caused a storm of controversy and divided public opinion in this country. At the time Geering was Principal of Knox Theological College in Dunedin.
Geering was tried by the Presbyterian Church for heresy and for the first time debates about ‘Man’s relationship to God’ were brought sharply into the New Zealand public forum.
Philip Braithwaite’s new play Honest To God paints a portrait of a man who wrestles with his conscience and his desire to tell the truth as he sees it.
The play’s centre is the trial years (1965-67) but Braithwaite masterfully takes us back to Geering’s early years as a student of theology and the tragic family events that shaped his views, to punctuate and give meaning to the views presented at his trial.
The play is being
read at Circa Theatre on 4 August 2012 as the second in
collaboration between the theatre and Playmarket.
Directed by Conrad
Newport (Live At Six, Me & Robert McKee, Rita
and Douglas) and with a talented cast - Jason
Whyte (Chekov in Hell, The Lead Wait);
Simon Leary (Mates and Lovers, Chekov in
Hell); Richard Dey (All My
Sons); Lauren Gibson (August: Osage
County) and Aroha White (Tu,
Sunset Road), the rehearsed reading of this new work
in development is not to be missed.
