Silver Ferns Team and Squads Named

20 August 2012: The NNZ National Selectors named today Mystics midcouter Bailey Mes as the new cap selected in the 12 strong Silver Ferns team to compete against Australia in the Constellation Cup, Sunday 16 September in Melbourne.

Midcourter Camilla Lees (Pulse) and experienced shooter Jodi Brown (Steel) also make a return to the new look Silver Ferns line up.

Taumaunu said there were some tough selection decisions but National Selectors felt this group offered a real mix of youth and experience.

“The trials environment enabled us to see all the players competing on a level playing field, it was a physically challenging few days and we were impressed with the performance of the group,” said Taumaunu.

“Bailey is the newcomer to the side and provides us with another option for the Silver Ferns midcourt, her performances at trials were outstanding and warranted the next step up,” she said.

Taumaunu said both Lees and Brown had also showed strong form in the trials and combined with their ANZ Championship performances had earned their places in the team.

“Camilla is a great addition into the Silver Ferns midcourt and Jodi brings versatility in the shooting circle giving the Silver Ferns team the depth we were looking for in the attacking line-up,” she said.

The Silver Ferns team will regroup again in a weeks’ time where they will participate in the first of two training camps prior to the Constellation Cup.

Originally from Wanganui, Jodi Brown made her national league debut at the age of 16 and has been involved in national squads at age group and senior level since then. Brown made her Silver Ferns debut at the World Netball Championships in 2003, and played against World No. 2 Australia for the first time in July 2004, building on this experience during the November 2004 Series. Brown made comeback in May 2007 after a year of recovery from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament on the eve of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Brown captained the 2012 Southern Steel team.

Camilla Lees is both a gifted midcourter and a master of the juggling act – balancing a netball career and medical studies. The future doctor from Pukekohe first made her mark on the international netball scene in 2009 – as a stand-out member of the Central Pulse in the ANZ Championship, then in the NZU21 side at the World Youth Championships in the Cook Islands. The agile midcourter capped off her notable year with inclusion in the Silver Ferns side touring England to play the English and Jamaican sides. Medical studies have meant Millie was unavailable for the Ferns in recent seasons, but she has remained “on call” - brought into the New Zealand side for the 2011 series against England to cover an injury. Potent at both wing attack and centre, she has also been a regular member of the FastNet Ferns.
