Kora – Light Years Live In Chch with Cairo Knife Fight

Kora – Light Years Live In Christchurch with Cairo Knife Fight

Fri 2 Nov – The Bedford, Christchurch

It’s been four years since Kora launched its self-titled, worlds-colliding debut album, that connected the dots between funk, rock, reggae, metal, hip hop and electronic rhythms. Now this five-strong collective of fearless sonic explorers have discovered a whole new constellation of future-shocked funk, soul and r’n’b – dubbing it ‘alien funk.’

To be released on October 26 2012, their anticipated new album ‘Light Years’ steps into the unknown on a bass odyssey, eschewing guitars in favour of a high-tech arsenal of synthesisers, live and sampled drums plus the otherworldly four-part harmonies of the brothers Laughton, Francis, Stuart and Brad Kora and brother-in-arms Dan McGruer.

And while this eagerly awaited collection of 11 tracks has been out there exploring unchartered territory – earth bound radio stations have been more than happy to go along for the ride. Album track ‘Dreamlife’ has been on air in New Zealand for the last six weeks.

Reactions have been stellar. The marriage of live and programmed instrumentation powers the unstoppable groove that continues to drive Kora, providing the sci-fi soundtrack to a collective fascination with video game culture, cosmology and space exploration.

Since the runaway success of Kora’s last album, which reached double platinum status in New Zealand, hardcore fans have been regularly flocking to the band’s sell out shows – and been hanging out to get a taste of the final frontier. And now their chance to be transported again by this experimental funk collective has finally arrived.

The Powerstation will be bouncing to the sensational sound of ALABAMA SHAKES, a band that has kicked soul music back into the future with an electrifying live reputation.

The Athens, Alabama quartet are fronted by Brittany Howard, barely 22 years old and already anointed the Next Big Thing for her throaty blues howl that according to critics is “no exaggeration, smack between Janis Joplin's and Jack White's…"

Their debut album Boys & Girls has been called one of the albums of 2012 by critics everywhere. From the heart-rending title song to such stomps as ‘Rise to the Sun’, the album demonstrates the sense of groove and space the band learned from their idols, along with a blistering force and emotion that simply can’t be learned. Auckland gets its first chance to taste that feeling in January 2012. Don’t make the mistake of missing out.

Presale starts from Fri 14 September at 6am and ends Thurs 20 September.Buy your ticket during the pre-sale and go into the draw to win a pair of free Grabaseat flights and tickets to the Sydney Big Day Out plus a pair of tickets to Auckland shows by Crystal Castles, Pretty Lights, Band of Horses and Alabama Shakes!
