Beyondsemble national tour 25 October – 7 December

Music to take you beyond: Beyondsemble national tour 25 October – 7 December

“Nothing short of pyrotechnic display of dazzling virtuosity by four highly imaginative and gifted musicians.”

“These four talented musicians have the skill to make music of the highest quality look easy. They play together with complete trust.”

Since its launch in 2009, Beyondsemble has shot into the limelight on the local festival scene and is receiving a great deal of attention offshore. Not long back from a successful European trip, the band is preparing for a nationwide tour – once again featuring an eclectic mix of original and improvised music merging Celtic, Latin, Jazz and Gypsy rhythm, all executed with consummate skill and infectious enthusiasm.

Featured on this upcoming tour is a change of line–up to include the multi–talented Jon Sanders (guitar, ukulele, bouzouki, vocals) in place of original guitarist Mark Mazengarb, presently pursuing his passion for American guitar music in the United States, and John Ellis on saxophone and clarinet. Continuing with Beyondsemble is founder Craig Denham (accordion, piano, whistles, vocals) and Chris Koole (cajon, percussion, lead vocals).

Beyondsemble launched its debut album, Beyondsemble in September 2011to excellent reviews.

About the musicians

Craig Denham has been composing and performing most of his life. He began playing professionally at age 12 with his father Bob Denham, a Kerikeri jazz saxophone and clarinet player. Craig has opened at the Auckland Festival with the Mamaku Project, played WOMAD and performed in Australia, The United States, UK and Ireland, France and the Islands.

Jon Sanders took up the guitar aged 12 and soon made his mark in London playing electric and acoustics in rock and folk bands in the 80's. He moved to Ireland in the early 90's where his career took off, developing a unique guitar and bouzouki style and playing with some of the greats in Irish traditional music including Mary and Michael Black, and Seamus Begley. Since relocating to NZ he has been making a name with the Sanders Alley Khan trio. www.jon–sanders.com

John Ellis is a multi–instrumentalist who plays woodwinds, hand and stick percussion, piano and a small flute. Originally from a classical background, John has developed a special interest in world music, working extensively with contemporary, African and Middle Eastern dance. He also writes and plays live music for theatre.

Chris Koole grew up in a musical family where he and his brothers learned the piano before moving onto guitar and drums. A composer and performer, Chris has created his own version of the cajon (box drum) as a way to reproduce most of the sounds of a drum kit, without having to transport one.
